Owner Stephanie Knoppe told the Daily American Republic that she started the shop because of her three daughters and the number of formals they went to. What they needed came from Branson — 215 miles west on US 60, close to four hours each way. Her first idea was a consignment shop in Poplar Bluff for resold prom dresses. The store opened in a small space near the post office, packed wall to wall with gowns, then bought and moved into 109 South Main Street downtown, in the same stretch of southeast Missouri storefronts that has filled in over the past few years.
It is a full formal store now, not a resale rack. The Prom Closet is an authorized retailer for Amarra and Clarisse, both of which list the shop on their own store locators. Beyond prom, the floor covers homecoming, pageant, special occasion, mother of the bride and groom, and, more recently, wedding dresses. Shoes, jewelry, purses and earrings are stocked alongside the gowns. Tuxedo rentals are handled here too, which matters in a town where a date’s tux and a dress otherwise mean two separate errands.
Alterations happen in the same building
Abby Rush is the shop seamstress. The store says she has been sewing professionally for more than eight years and works on dresses bought elsewhere, not only ones off its own racks. That is the practical argument for buying in Poplar Bluff at all: the nearest larger selections are about 75 miles northeast in Cape Girardeau, and a hem that needs a second look is a wasted afternoon if it is 75 miles away. The store also does spray tans and sells self-tanner, and it takes bookings for private prom shopping through its online scheduler.
Who walks in
Poplar Bluff High School is the biggest single source — the Mules enrolled 1,416 students in 2024–25. Around it sit districts small enough that a graduating class is a few dozen people: Twin Rivers R-X at Broseley, about 14 miles out; Neelyville R-IV and Naylor R-II in Ripley County, roughly 19 miles each, with Naylor enrolling around 360 students across all grades; Puxico R-VIII over in Stoddard County. Three Rivers College is in town as well.
Pageants are part of the business, not a sideline. The DAR’s coverage of the store included a Teen Miss Stoddard County second alternate wearing a dress bought here. Knoppe has said she keeps a range of price points on the floor deliberately.
Getting there
US 60 and US 67 cross in Poplar Bluff, so the drive in from Dexter, Doniphan, Van Buren or Qulin is one road most of the way. The address is downtown, a few blocks from the Rodgers Theatre and the Black River Coliseum, with street parking rather than a mall lot. Poplar Bluff is not the only town option — there is a second formal store out on Butler Street — but downtown is where a dress trip can be combined with the rest of the errand list.
The shop also brings dresses and accessories to the Wedding & Prom Expo at the Holiday Inn, where it has run runway shows. That is one way to see current stock in February without booking a fitting first.
