Taylortown Road is not somewhere you drive past on the way to anything. It runs through farm country north of the city, and directions to that stretch send you up Ohio 13 out of Mansfield and then west onto the township roads. Richland Source opened its 2015 profile of this shop by asking who would drive out into Ohio farmland to buy a wedding dress. Owner Jan Kuhn’s answer, in that same piece: brides from Columbus, Cleveland and Dayton, and prom shoppers whose families have come from Indiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Georgia.
The reason people make the drive is stock. The store says it keeps more than 4,000 gowns on the racks at all times, and that the prom and homecoming end of that is roughly a thousand dresses each — prom in one stock, homecoming in another. Sizes run 0 to 34-plus, and the shop is specific that those sizes are on the rack rather than something to be ordered and waited on. There is also a clearance rack that gets added to through the season.

It is appointment only, and the hours are unusual
This is the part worth reading twice before anyone gets in a car. Kuhn’s runs by appointment — the phone number is (419) 522-0048 — and its posted schedule does not look like retail hours anywhere else in north central Ohio:

The Monday block running to 9:00 p.m. is the one that matters for a student with practice or a shift after school; Saturday, the day most families would default to, closes at 2:00 p.m. Confirm both when you call, since the hours are the store’s own posting rather than something checked in person.
Who shops here
The trade area is Richland County and the edges of Ashland County: Mansfield Senior, Madison Comprehensive, Ontario, Lexington, Shelby, Lucas, Plymouth, Crestview, St. Peter’s and Mansfield Christian. Proms here land in late spring rather than March — Madison’s 2025 prom was May 3, per Richland Source’s photo gallery from that weekend. Working backward from that, and given that the store sells off the rack instead of ordering in, the shopping happens in February and March, and the shop’s own prom page says only one thing about timing: shop early for the best selection. The separate homecoming stock means the same drive is worth making again in late summer.
The costume years
Before it was only gowns, this address was Kuhn’s costume rental. Jan Kuhn taught and coached drama at Crestview High School, and costumes were the natural extension of that; she rented and sold them from 1979 until November 2014, when she closed that side down to focus on bridal and formal. Some directory listings still carry the costume name a decade later, so if a search turns up “Kuhn Costume Rental” at 703 Taylortown Road, that is this shop. The 2015 profile also describes what she spent the costume proceeds on: new carpet, lighting, signage and landscaping, roomier dressing rooms, and a place for the men in the party to sit down.
Another bridal and formal shop opened in Mansfield proper in 2022, so this is not the only option in the county. What Kuhn’s has is the volume and the size range, and the trade-off for that is a country address and a phone call before you go.
