For most of the last half century, buying a formal dress in Bala Cynwyd meant Saks Fifth Avenue at 2 Bala Plaza, which had occupied that City Avenue storefront since 1969. It closed in April 2026 as part of its parent company’s Chapter 11 restructuring. Gabrielle sits minutes away on the same Pennsylvania side of City Avenue, at 200 Monument Road, Suite 9 — an office building rather than a shopping-center storefront, with parking directly in front and no open sales floor to wander into.
The shop opened in 2007, started by Susan Hass Cooper and her mother-in-law, the late Marilyn Cooper. In 2012 they added G-Lizzy, a line of the business meant for girls, tweens and teens to shop alongside their mothers — the store still runs its Facebook page under that name. That history explains what a prom appointment here actually looks like. A junior trying on a Jovani is in the same rooms where mothers of the bride, wedding guests and mitzvah guests are being fitted. It is a styling appointment with one person walking you through it, not an hour of pulling gowns off a rack by yourself.
Three prom-heavy labels list Gabrielle on their own retailer locators: Jovani, Alyce Paris and Jessica Angel. Worth knowing before booking: the store’s own website now leads with mothers of the bride and groom, wedding guests and custom work, with no prom page in its navigation. Ask on the phone what teen inventory is actually in the building this season. The boutique has run prom preview events in the past — Main Line Today covered a February trend preview with a Philadelphia makeup artist — so prom is part of the business, but it is not the whole store.
How a visit works
- Closed Mondays. Tuesday through Sunday is by appointment, booked online through the store’s scheduling link or by calling (610) 668-2801.
- Walk-ins are accommodated only when a fitting room and a stylist happen to be free.
- Alterations are handled by three independent contractors who work on site Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Not everything is a special order. An in-stock gown that fits well may need only minor alterations.
- Parking is in the lot right in front of the suite.
The store recommends ordering at least six months before an event. Lower Merion proms fall in spring — Harriton’s junior prom landed on a mid-April Saturday in 2026 — so a special order means shopping in October or November. Anyone starting after New Year’s is realistically shopping what is already in stock, which is a reason to ask about on-hand sizes when booking.
Who is within driving distance
Lower Merion School District serves Lower Merion Township and Narberth, roughly 62,000 residents, and sends its students to Lower Merion High School and Harriton High School. City Avenue is the Philadelphia line, which puts the shop within a few minutes of city neighborhoods as well as the Main Line. Bar and bat mitzvah dressing is a steady part of the calendar here alongside prom and weddings; the store’s own customer notes include thanks for a mitzvah dress. For a tuxedo on the same trip, Men’s Wearhouse is at 71 E. City Avenue, a few blocks away.
One honest caveat: the public review record is small and split. Yelp lists 11 reviews, with mothers-of-the-bride praising the buying and the fit work, and other reviewers describing brusque treatment, including of teenage shoppers. In an appointment-based shop where one stylist runs the hour, that is worth weighing — and worth asking, when booking, who will be working the appointment.
