Before there was a store, there was Jodi Degen sewing. She picked it up young and made garments by hand — prom dresses, and eventually the wedding gown for her future sister-in-law. That work turned into a business called Sweet Things, run out of the family home, and then a retail shop in Rockwell that she and her husband John bought. When Rockwell ran out of room, they went looking in Mason City, the retail center for this end of the state, and merged with a local formalwear store. The combined business has operated here since 2011 under the name Bliss.
That history matters to a prom shopper for one practical reason: alterations are done in house. A store that began as a custom sewing operation kept its own alterations team instead of sending gowns out to a third party.
What it carries
Three prom labels are confirmed through the designers’ own retailer locators: Clarisse, Colette and Faviana. By the store’s own listing, prom, homecoming and pageant gowns run sizes 000 to 30. Bliss is also a Jim’s Formal Wear affiliate for tuxedo and suit rental, so a couple can be measured and outfitted on the same trip rather than making two.
The store does not publish prom prices. Its own Facebook listing puts the price range at $$$, which is the only figure anyone has stated publicly — worth a phone call before you drive.
The drive, and who makes it
2810 South Federal Avenue is on U.S. 65, the north–south strip that carries most of Mason City’s commercial traffic. The city sits about eight miles east of Interstate 35, roughly halfway between Des Moines and the Twin Cities, with the Avenue of the Saints (U.S. 18 / Iowa 27) running just south of the city limits. For most of north Iowa, that combination is why Mason City is where you shop for a formal dress.
Two high schools are in town: Mason City High, home of the Mohawks, and Newman Catholic, the Knights, a small Archdiocese of Dubuque school on 19th Street SW. Past the city limits, the trade area is essentially the Top of Iowa Conference map — Osage, St. Ansgar, Northwood-Kensett, Rockford, Central Springs, Nashua-Plainfield, West Fork in Sheffield, Lake Mills, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and Bishop Garrigan in Algona among them. Bliss also names Charles City, Algona, Northwood and Fort Dodge in its service area, plus Albert Lea and Austin across the Minnesota line.
Some customers come from considerably farther. One shopper the store quotes on its prom page describes it plainly:
“My mom and I travelled a few hours away to come to Bliss.”
Before you go
Bliss runs on booked appointments and assigns you to a stylist for the visit; there is an online booking system and a phone line at (641) 201-1032. Listed hours are noon to 6 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, noon to 8 on Tuesday and Thursday, 10 to 4 Saturday, and noon to 4 Sunday. The two evening nights and the Sunday afternoon are the useful ones if the shopper in question has school and a practice schedule. Hours shift around family events and prom season, so confirm by phone.
One thing to know if you are coming from the north end of town or off the highway: South Federal has been through Iowa DOT reconstruction in recent seasons, with segments closed to through traffic and businesses reached by side streets.
