Urban Dress Co. is the new name on Teresa's Bridal & Prom in downtown Algona

Algona's Teresa's Bridal & Prom is now Urban Dress Co.: Sherri Hill, Jovani, Faviana and Morilee prom gowns off the rack, in-house alterations, free layaway.

Same storefront on East State Street. Same phone number. A new sign. Teresa's Bridal & Prom, the Algona shop that Teresa Kellenberger built from the ground up, now trades as Urban Dress Co., and the owner frames it as a fresh chapter for the same business rather than a different store. Families who bought a gown from Teresa's a decade ago are walking back into the same building, with a remodeled space and a prom wall that has grown.

The owner behind the change is Alyssa Urban, who grew up in Fenton, started working part time for Teresa in 2015 and took over the shop in July 2019, a couple of months after finishing a business degree at the University of South Dakota. Her About page says she is proud to carry on Teresa's Bridal and Prom "after 40 years," which puts the business in Algona since at least 1979. In north central Iowa terms, that means many of today's prom shoppers have mothers who were fitted in the same rooms.

The prom side of Urban Dress Co.

Prom has its own page on the new site, and it names four labels. Sherri Hill is there, along with Jovani, Faviana and Morilee. That is a serious set of names for a county-seat town, and it covers a wide spread of looks, from beaded and fitted Sherri Hill styles to the softer, trend-driven Faviana line. The shop describes its collections as chosen with "today's bride and prom shopper in mind," and the prom racks are where that shows.

Inventory is the other detail families notice. The FAQ says almost everything in the store can be bought off the rack. For a Kossuth County student who would rather not wait weeks on a special order, that can be the difference between a dress in hand by February and a dress that arrives right before grand march.

Walk-ins are welcome for prom, with one caveat that the shop states clearly in its FAQ.

We will accept walk-ins, but we can't guarantee a consultant and dressing room, especially during Prom Season.

That line from the Urban Dress Co. FAQ is the reason a booked time makes sense once school dances start appearing on the calendar. Appointments are recommended, not required, for everything except wedding gowns. The FAQ also notes that appointments have no time limit, which helps when a shopper needs a second round of try-ons before deciding.

Alterations, layaway and a tux for the date

Few shops in this part of the state handle the whole prom checklist in one building, and this one comes close. The site lays out the services in plain terms:

  • A seamstress works in house, with transparent pricing quoted before the work starts. Gowns bought elsewhere can be altered too, within some limits.
  • Free layaway, so a purchased dress can stay at the store until the dance. Anything leaving the building has to be paid in full first.
  • Men's formalwear through Jim's Formalwear, with an online tuxedo measurement form for dates and groups who cannot get in for a fitting.
  • All credit cards except American Express, plus cash and checks.

The return policy is firm: sales are final, and canceling a special order forfeits the deposit. The FAQ adds that if something arrives damaged or a mistake is made, the staff will work to put it right. Knowing that up front is part of choosing well, and it is one more reason to try the gown on in the store rather than guessing at a size.

Bridal still has a full department here, with Morilee, Casablanca and Allure gowns and a mothers' section, but prom is what fills the shop from January through April.

Who shops here

Algona sits near the middle of Kossuth County, the largest county in the state by land area, and the shop draws from well beyond the city limits. Students from Algona High School shop here, along with families from Humboldt High School to the south and Emmetsburg High School to the west, plus smaller districts like North Union in Armstrong. For those towns, a downtown Algona storefront is the closest place to try on Sherri Hill and Jovani in person. Shoppers looking at the wider north central Iowa picture will find this store sits in a region where formalwear options are spread thin, which is why the about page talks about customers coming "from all over the Midwest."

The schedule is worth noting. The shop keeps short weekday afternoon hours early in the week and closes one weekday, with longer hours later in the week and a Saturday morning window. Check the posted hours on the Urban Dress Co. site before planning a drive from Humboldt or Emmetsburg.

Teresa's, Urban Dress Co. and Algona prom shopping, answered

Is Urban Dress Co. the same business as Teresa's Bridal & Prom?

Yes. The homepage describes Urban Dress Co. as reimagined from Teresa's Bridal & Prom, at the same East State Street address with the same phone number and the same owner who bought Teresa's in 2019.

Can my prom gown be altered at the store?

Yes. A seamstress works on site, prices are quoted up front, and the shop can also alter some dresses that were bought somewhere else.
