Most prom shopping ends with a second errand: finding someone to take in the bodice and hem the skirt. At this Egg Harbor Road shop in Washington Township, that part stays in house. The store describes itself as a specialty social occasion dress store that does its own custom alterations, and the owner, Debbie Smith, is a professional seamstress rather than a buyer who sends work out. Between July and December, when the prom rush is over, the shop also takes in outside alteration work on men’s and children’s clothing and custom projects.
The store’s own site names pageant work as part of that history: alterations for Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2014 Kira Kazantsev, Mrs. United States 2013 Joy Jones-Carmack, Miss New Jersey 2016 Brenna Weick and Miss USA National Jr. Teen 2017 Natalie Sommermann. That is the shop’s account of its own résumé, not a third-party award, but it matches what the business is set up to do — heavy beaded gowns, fitted close.
Appointments are required, though the shop says walk-ins are welcome. Calling first is the sensible move in January and February.

Two big high schools, both with Sewell addresses
Sewell is a mailing address more than a town. The 08080 ZIP is split between Mantua Township and Washington Township in Gloucester County, southern New Jersey, and this shop sits on the Washington Township side, at the crossroads of Egg Harbor and Hurffville-Grenloch Roads in a strip anchored by a Country Farms, with a CVS and a Dunkin at the light.
About two miles south, on Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, is Washington Township High School — 2,108 students in grades 9 through 12 as of 2023–24. Four or five miles west, on Tanyard Road next to Rowan College of South Jersey, is Gloucester County Institute of Technology, with roughly 1,650 students drawn from across the county. Clearview Regional in Mullica Hill and Delsea Regional in Franklinville sit fifteen and twenty minutes out. That is a lot of juniors and seniors inside a short radius.
Washington Township runs a junior prom and a senior prom, which means many families here buy two gowns two years apart. The junior class page put the 2025 junior prom on Friday, April 11, at the DoubleTree on Route 70 in Cherry Hill. An April prom pushes serious shopping into January, and alterations into March.

Roughly fifteen miles north, Jan’s Boutique in Cherry Hill advertises more than 15,000 dresses in stock and 50 dressing rooms. If the goal is to see a thousand gowns in one afternoon and rule out every silhouette at once, that is the trip to take. Closer in, Jovani’s own retailer list also points to Magda Couture in Deptford and Dahlia Prom Boutique in East Greenwich Township. The Right Fit is the small-room version of the same errand: an appointment, a limited but curated rack of the six brands above, and the fitting handled where the dress was bought.
Reviews are mixed and worth reading in full before you go. The shop holds 4.8 stars from 11 reviews on The Knot and a 94 percent recommend rate across 279 Facebook reviews, but only 3.1 stars from 14 reviews on Yelp, where the complaints are about attention during busy appointments and about condition-of-dress disputes. The strong reviews consistently mention the alterations work.
