The prom-dress question in St. Lawrence County is really a driving question. Watertown, the nearest place with a mall, is 71 miles from Potsdam — about an hour and a half each way — and the formal-dress storefront that appears at Salmon Run Mall is a seasonal tenant that packs up at the end of May, according to the Watertown Daily Times. Syracuse is a day trip. Montreal means a border crossing. Which is why the shop at 36 Market Street matters more here than a single dress store would matter almost anywhere else in New York.
Eternity Bridal and Boutique occupies the storefront that used to be the Carol Lee Shoppe. By the store’s own account, that business had been running for more than thirty years and was the oldest bridal shop in the county before it changed hands in July 2015 and reopened under the Eternity name. The block itself is the Market Street Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1979 — eight acres of Federal, Italianate and Romanesque buildings, the oldest dating to about 1820.

The village is also a two-campus college town, home to SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University, with more than thirty restaurants and cafes downtown and an independent movie theater. If you are coming in from Madrid or Colton for an appointment, there is a lunch and an afternoon in it rather than a drive-through errand.
