One of each, registered by event
Duplicate dresses are the quiet worry of every prom season in a city the size of Anchorage, where a handful of high schools share the same few shops. Orainda's Bridal Boutique, on the Old Seward Highway in Midtown, answers it with a buying rule. The formals collection covers mothers, prom, pageant, evening wear and kids' dresses, and the boutique orders those styles one at a time.
We bring in only one of any style, so you won't run into the same dress at your big event. Event registration is for current year events only.
That second sentence matters for juniors. A gown registered to last spring's prom doesn't hold a style for this year, so the protection applies to the event you name when you buy.
The Formals page lists three lines: Alyce Paris, Stella Couture, and Morilee's MGNY collection, which is cut for mothers. The site notes that many of the gowns pictured online can be found in the boutique, and that full designer catalogs are available to look through in person. One rack, one of each, and a catalog for anything that isn't hanging there.
How the appointment side works
Orainda's books its formal visits through the same live scheduler it uses for brides. The appointments page invites anyone looking for prom, social occasion or quinceañera dresses to request a time online, and the boutique describes the shopping style as hands-on: gowns aren't hidden in a back room, and you are free to touch and browse the collections with a consultant beside you.
- Length
- Formal and quinceañera appointments run about an hour.
- Guests
- The fitting area seats three or four people, so bring the friends or family whose opinion you trust most.
- Timing
- Evening and Saturday slots fill quickly, and the shop keeps a waitlist for cancellations. Weekend visits are by appointment only.
- Walk-ins
- Appointments are highly recommended, but the shop will fit in walk-ins when there is room.
- What to bring
- The right undergarments, heels close to the height you'll wear to the dance, and photos from designer websites of the styles you want to try.
The boutique also asks shoppers to know their price point before they arrive, so the consultant doesn't pull gowns outside the budget. Hemming and fitting happen elsewhere. Orainda's does not do alterations itself, and its resources page points customers to local tailors it recommends. Leave a few weeks for that step after the purchase.
A few smaller services suit graduating seniors in particular. The price list includes steaming for a graduation gown and stole, along with steaming for bridesmaid gowns and men's suits. When the schedule allows, the shop will also deliver dresses within Anchorage or out to the Mat-Su for a set fee.
Orainda started the shop after years in the wedding business, from flowers to wedding planning, and bridal gowns still lead the website. The team travels to events around the state, a sensible approach in a place where a dress fitting can mean a flight, and KTVA featured the boutique on the news in 2015.
Service High and Dimond High families on the south side, and West High students from the neighborhoods west of Midtown, are close to the Old Seward store, and shoppers from across Alaska's largest city come for the one-of-a-kind buying rule.
Shopping formals at Orainda's
Can Orainda's hem or take in a prom gown?
No. The boutique does not offer alterations, though it lists local tailors it recommends on its resources page.
Which formal designers does Orainda's carry?
The Formals page names Alyce Paris and Stella Couture, plus the Morilee MGNY line for mothers. Full catalogs are in the shop if the style you want isn't on the rack.
