Measuring the gap

Two of the shops stand about two and a half miles apart. Fourth Ave Boutique is downtown on East Fourth Avenue, and Orainda's is in Midtown on the Old Seward Highway. Arctic Rose sits roughly 30 miles northeast of both, in Palmer. That is the whole footprint. A circle holding all three barely reaches past the Mat-Su Valley.

Everything else is far away. Measured in a straight line from the nearest shop, using each store's coordinates, Soldotna lies some 63 miles out and Valdez roughly 100. Homer comes in near 120. Fairbanks is roughly 230, Kodiak 250, Bethel 400 and Juneau 560, while Ketchikan clears 760. Road miles run longer, and from several of these towns the only way to a fitting room is a plane. No closer cluster waits across a border. Families out there plan a trip to town.

How the shops work around distance

There is no return policy to fall back on at Fourth Ave Boutique. Every sale is final, so a shopper has one chance at the size. The store's guide says to order up when a measurement sits between two sizes and have the gown taken in, and it gives a standard 63-inch length before the train, which tells a tall girl in heels whether the hem will reach the floor.

Shoppers within driving range get a different set of protections. Orainda's brings in only one of any style and registers dresses by event for the current year, a rule built for a city where several high schools shop the same few stores. It does no alterations and refers customers to local tailors. When the schedule allows, it will deliver a dress anywhere in Anchorage or out to the Mat-Su for a set fee. A customer review on Fourth Ave's site says that shop keeps a prom registry too, so give your school and date at the register.

Mat-Su students have the easiest trip of all. Wasilla sits 5 miles or so from the Palmer address, which is where Arctic Rose moved, so an old listing that still puts it in Wasilla is out of date. Its booking page offers a Prom & Formal Wear appointment built around Clarisse, and same-day visits go through a phone call. Special orders need a deposit and must be picked up within 30 days of arrival or a storage fee applies.

Questions people ask

Questions people ask

Is an inspiration photo worth bringing to a prom appointment?

Yes, and bring the style number with it if you can find one. Orainda's asks shoppers to arrive with photos from designer websites of the gowns they want to try, plus the right undergarments and heels near the height they will wear. At Arctic Rose, a number from the Clarisse lookbook lets staff check whether that dress is in the shop or how long an order would take to reach Palmer.
