The store asks shoppers to bring a few things so its stylists can judge silhouette, fit and accessories accurately.

How a shop on Webber Street got its start

The story behind the name is a good one. Erika Alarcon came to the United States from Mexico and was working as a housecleaner when she spotted an empty storefront and decided to open a dress shop, as the Sarasota Observer reported in a 2023 profile. She opened Barbie's Boutique in 2014 and named it for her daughter. Her very first customer call was a request for olive-colored cummerbunds, which led her to partner with Jim's Formal Wear, and tuxedos have been part of the business ever since.

The Observer also reported that a clientele that started out mostly Latino has grown to roughly 80 percent non-Latino. The bilingual service stayed. So did the quinceañera business, which runs alongside prom and gives the shop an unusually wide range of formalwear for a single storefront. Alarcon told the paper she sources inventory from markets across the country and relies on Mexican seamstresses for alterations, which the store still handles in house.

The prom racks

The online catalog is the best preview of what is waiting at the main boutique, and its prom collection runs past a hundred styles. Morilee is the deepest prom selection on the site, with dozens of current styles, Cinderella Divine sits in the evening collection, and Nox Anabel turns up throughout. The other prom and evening labels the shop names in its own catalog sort by look.

Homecoming has its own early-season appointments, and the shop also carries short cocktail dresses, pageant styles, formal jumpsuits and accessories. That range pays off for families juggling more than one event in a year. A sophomore can buy a homecoming dress in the fall, come back for prom in the spring and send a brother or date to the same counter for a tuxedo.

Bridal now lives at a separate, appointment-only bridal boutique in Midtown Plaza on South Tamiami Trail, so the Webber Street shop keeps its focus on prom, quinceañera, evening and mother-of-the-bride dresses.

Webber Street sits in central Sarasota, the same city as Sarasota High, Riverview and Booker. Venice, North Port, Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton all fall within Sarasota and Manatee counties, which makes the shop a realistic option for families anywhere on Florida's Suncoast. If you're booking for spring, start early. A hem or strap adjustment still takes time after the dress is chosen, and the weeks before prom are the busiest of the year for any formal shop.

The visit itself runs about an hour for a prom or homecoming styling session, longer for a quinceañera. Sunday is by appointment only. For quinceañera and bridal appointments, the shop requires a $50 reservation fee that is credited toward the purchase.
