Two things changed the map for formalwear shopping in Berrien County. The first was 1982, when Wedding Belles opened in Stevensville as an independent, family-run bridal boutique. The second was spring 2020, when Alexa Claire Boutique and Tux Shop on Niles Avenue in St. Joseph — family owned and operated since 1972 — closed permanently after the shutdown wiped out prom and wedding season. Wedding Belles is the one still standing, and it is where a lot of local families now start.
The store sits at 4209 Red Arrow Hwy, which it describes as within half a mile of I-94, with its own lot. Red Arrow is the old US-12 alignment that runs inland of the lake through southwest Michigan; it was handed to local control once I-94 was built, and it carries the name of the 32nd “Red Arrow” Infantry Division, dedicated in 1952. That means the drive in is the surface road, not the freeway ramp shuffle — easier with a car full of dresses and a mother and daughter arguing about neckline.
The schools that fill the fitting rooms
Lakeshore High School on Cleveland Avenue in Stevensville is the shop’s home school: about 850 students in grades 9–12, the only high school in Lakeshore Public Schools. Two miles up the lakeshore is St. Joseph High School. The football game between them has been played since 1961 and, per the Herald-Palladium, draws more than 5,000 people. The two prom crowds that spend all fall trying to beat each other end up shopping the same racks on Red Arrow Highway, which is a real reason to go early and ask what has already sold to your school.
Beyond those two, Berrien County packs in a lot of small districts within a reasonable drive: Bridgman, New Buffalo, Coloma, Watervliet, River Valley, Berrien Springs, Eau Claire, Buchanan, Brandywine, Niles, Benton Harbor, and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in St. Joseph, which took its current name after decades as Lake Michigan Catholic. None of those towns has a comparable full-line formalwear store of its own.
What is actually in the store
Three prom labels are confirmed on their makers’ own retailer locators: Alyce Paris, Dave & Johnny, and Tiffany Designs. Dessy also lists the store for bridesmaid collections. Pageant is not a sideline here — the shop puts pageant gowns alongside bridal and prom in its own description of the business and says it has dressed Miss Michigan contestants. It also does alterations in-house and rents tuxedos as a Jim’s Formal Wear dealer, so a couple can be measured and fitted on the same trip rather than splitting the errand between two towns.

The Jim’s Formal Wear dealer listing shows a later Wednesday close and a Sunday afternoon window, but prom-season hours and appointment rules shift, and the store markets itself to Chicago-area and out-of-state shoppers as well as local ones, so weekends in March and April are the busy end of the calendar.
