This is a wedding shop first. Everything on the store’s own website points at brides — trend collections, off-the-rack gowns, plus sizes, a Disney line — and there is no prom page anywhere in its navigation. But two prom labels, Alyce Paris and Dave & Johnny, both list 6121 Menaul Blvd. NE on their official retailer locators, and the store’s own listing with Jim’s Formal Wear names prom and homecoming dresses, pageant dresses, and flower girl dresses among its services. So prom exists here. It just isn’t merchandised online, which means a phone call before the drive does more for you than any amount of scrolling.
What a prom shopper actually gets from that arrangement is bridal-shop machinery pointed at a much cheaper dress. The shop runs on booked one-on-one appointments rather than an open floor you graze, it describes its consultants as non-commissioned, and it keeps seamstresses in the building — its alterations page lists hems, bodywork, straps, sleeve changes and cup changes as routine work. A gown that needs two inches off the hem does not have to leave the address to get it.
The building and how you reach it
The store occupies Suite D of its own freestanding 4,000-square-foot building on Menaul, which it describes as sitting between a Satellite Coffee and a McDonald’s. The nearest cross street is California St. NE, a few blocks west of Coronado Center at 6600 Menaul. Coronado’s own visitor page tells drivers to take I-40 to Exit 162, Louisiana — the same exit works for this block. Yelp lists private lot parking, which in Uptown matters: this is the one part of New Mexico where the parking is a shopping mall’s problem, and here it isn’t.
The upside of that address is that the rest of the trip is already there. Coronado, Winrock Town Center and ABQ Uptown are all inside a mile, so shoes, alteration drop-offs and a second opinion from a friend can be folded into one afternoon instead of three.
Who shops here
Sandia High at 7801 Candelaria NE and Del Norte at 5323 Montgomery NE are both a short drive north — this is their closest full-service formalwear address, not a destination trip. The wider Northeast Heights schools, Eldorado and Manzano and La Cueva, plus Albuquerque Academy and Sandia Prep, all sit within the same arc of the city. Uptown is roughly the middle of that map, which is most of why a shop like this survives on Menaul rather than in a mall.
Before you go
Two things to settle by phone, both because the public record is genuinely unclear:
- Which days it is open. The Jim’s Formal Wear listing shows the store closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Yelp shows it open midweek. Do not guess.
- What prom stock is on the floor right now. Being on a brand’s locator means the store is an authorized account, not that every Alyce Paris or Dave & Johnny style is hanging there in your size. Ask what is physically in the building and what has to be ordered, and ask how long an order takes against your school’s date.
One more thing worth knowing if you are shopping as a couple: the store rents and sells tuxedos and suits through Jim’s Formal Wear at the same counter. The dress and the tux come from one address, with one set of measurements taken by one staff.
