What this guide covers
Listed here are 739 prom and formal dress boutiques across 49 states, grouped by the state they trade in. Every shop here is an independent storefront a shopper can walk into rather than a marketplace listing, and each one has been reviewed individually before it was published. We also check each shop's designer labels against the manufacturers' own retailer locators, so the label lists reflect an authorization the designer publishes, not a claim scraped from a shop's homepage.
The counts on the map are live. They move as shops open, close, or change what they carry, which in this trade happens more often than most listings let on.
Which designers you will actually find
29 designer labels turn up across these shops, but they are not spread evenly, and knowing which ones travel is most of the planning. Jovani is close to a default, stocked in 466 of the 739 shops listed here and present in 43 states, so a shopper who has settled on that house can usually choose on location and fit instead of driving to the one store that carries it. Sherri Hill follows in 356 shops and Alyce Paris in 299. The widest spread belongs to Sherri Hill, sold in 45 states.
Past that top handful the map narrows quickly. A designer carried in a dozen shops nationally may sit at a single address in your state, which is the difference between choosing a store and driving to the only one. Each label page lists every shop that carries it, grouped by state.

What to check before you drive
The useful questions are rarely about the gown. 117 of these shops require an appointment, so arriving on a Saturday in March without one can mean being turned away at the busiest time of the year. 211 do alterations in house, which matters because a gown that needs a hem and a bodice taken in is a second trip and a second bill if the shop cannot do it themselves.
142 keep a dress registry, logging which gown went to which student at which school so two girls do not arrive at the same prom in the same dress. If that matters to you it is worth asking before you buy, because a registry only protects you if your dress is in it. 168 offer layaway, which spreads a gown across several months rather than one card statement.
Longevity is worth weighing too. 161 of these shops have been dressing proms since 1990 or earlier, and the oldest on the list opened in 1905. A store that has bought gowns for thirty seasons tends to have depth per silhouette and staff who can read a fit quickly.

Where the selection is deepest
Coverage follows population, but not exactly. Pennsylvania leads with 49 shops, ahead of Texas (47), Florida (43), New York (40) and Georgia (39). Depth in a state is not the same as depth in a room, though. A state with fifty shops spread across it can still leave one metro thin, and the state pages break that down region by region.

Questions people ask
Questions people ask
When should I start shopping for a prom dress?
Most shops will tell you December through February, and the pressure is real: selection thins through March, and alterations queues fill behind it. If your prom is in April and your gown needs work, a February purchase leaves room for two fittings. Shopping in the last three weeks usually means choosing from what is on the rack in your size rather than ordering.
Do I need an appointment to try on prom dresses?
Often, yes. 117 of the 739 shops listed here require one, and many that do not still recommend booking during the January-to-March rush. Each store page notes what we have confirmed, but a phone call before a long drive is never wasted.
How do I make sure nobody else has my dress?
Ask whether the shop keeps a dress registry. 142 of the stores here do, recording the gown, the school and the student so the same dress is not sold twice into one prom. It is the single most reliable protection against the thing most shoppers worry about, and it only works at shops that run one.
Can a shop order a dress it does not have in my size?
Usually, if there is time. Special orders through a designer typically run several weeks, sometimes longer near the season peak, and that is before alterations. It is the main reason the shopping calendar matters more than the budget.
How were these stores verified?
Each listing was reviewed individually rather than imported in bulk. We also check each shop's designer labels against the manufacturers' own retailer locators, which is why a store page will sometimes list fewer labels than the shop advertises. We list what we can confirm.
