Map of Vermont with 1 prom dress shop Needleman's Bride & Formals, South Burlington

One prom shop in the state is listed here, and it is a big one. Needleman's in South Burlington has been a family business since 1925 and told Seven Days it sells around five hundred prom dresses a year. For Chittenden County that settles the question. For a student in Bennington or Brattleboro, the nearest prom rack is probably in another state.

  • Needleman's Bride & Formals, South Burlington (Chittenden County): no appointment needed for prom, bridesmaids or tux rentals; only wedding gown shoppers are asked to book.

    • Dress registry
    • Tuxedos
    • 3 labels

Plan the visit around the house rules. Bring an adult, since the store asks students to shop with one. Leave shoes at the door, too, where a no-shoes policy keeps the gowns clean. And relatives paying from out of state get a small break: Vermont charges no sales tax on clothing, gowns included, as the store's FAQ points out.

The southern tier is a different trip. Bennington sits about 25 miles in a straight line from Elle's Bridal Boutique in Mechanicville, which keeps more than 200 prom and special-event dresses in the store, and South Burlington is twice as far. More Capital Region shops are on the New York prom dress stores page. Brattleboro families should start with the Berkshires on the Massachusetts prom dress stores page. Upper Valley families around White River Junction are about 50 miles from A Day to Remember in Concord, where prom shoppers walk in without an appointment. Rutland is the tossup. Needleman's and Elle's are each about 60 miles off, so pick by label or by whichever drive you know.

Questions people ask

When is the in-state shop the right call?

Anywhere from Montpelier north. Needleman's is about 33 miles from Montpelier, 24 from St. Albans and under 60 from both Newport and St. Johnsbury, and no out-of-state shop on this site comes close for those towns. Seven Days described Newport students driving two hours for the bigger selection. Three reasons make the trip worth it. The first prom shipment lands in January. Staff record which dress went to which prom, so a classmate cannot buy your gown for the same dance. And a date can rent a tux in the same building, with $50 off for school events. Weekdays beat Saturdays, when the dressing rooms back up.

Should I wear shapewear to try on a fitted gown?

Yes, bring the exact piece you plan to wear on prom night and put it on for every try-on. A fitted jersey or satin gown shows each seam underneath, and a hem or bodice measured without shapewear will sit wrong with it. That matters more at Needleman's than at most shops. Every sale there is final and the store does no alterations, so its FAQ points you to local seamstresses who see its gowns often. Take the shapewear to them too. Skin-tone, seamless pieces disappear under light colors. A smoothing slip works under a slinky column dress where full bodysuits can bunch. A Day to Remember's prom tips ask for proper undergarments for the same reason.
