Brenda and Aaron Neely opened A Perfect Dress in 1992, and for years Brenda ran it alongside a teaching career. When the Salisbury Post profiled the shop in 2016, it reported that she taught for 32 years, 29 of them in Rowan County, and that five years before retiring she began opening the shop for a couple of hours each afternoon. Customers liked it. Students could come by once classes let out, and parents could meet them there after work. The shop's own site still describes the owners as retired teachers with 65 years of combined experience in education in Rowan County, and the late-afternoon rhythm has never gone away.

That background shapes how prom works here. Brenda told the Post she was starting to see the children of students she had once taught, and some of them asked what their parents were like back then. In a town the size of China Grove, that is not a figure of speech. It is a regular spring afternoon.

The prom racks

Prom is the season that sets the pace. The shop's prom page promises a large selection of the latest prom styles, and it names the lines behind them. Among the designers the site lists:

The racks also cover christening gowns, wedding gowns and mother's dresses, which is why the site's tagline runs "from christening gowns to wedding dresses." Bridal is part of the business, but around here the shop is best known as the place juniors and seniors go in the spring.

Fittings, and the people who made the shop

When the Post visited during the 2016 prom rush, it found Brenda moving between mirrors and the front counter while seamstress Peggy Irving pinned a gown in the back. Irving trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology, worked with designers in the New York fashion world, and moved to North Carolina in 1994. The article described her job as making sure garments were custom-fitted to each client, and Brenda credited that custom fit with making all the difference in how a dress finally looks. Brenda Neely gave the Salisbury Post that answer when asked what keeps her going each season. The same story noted that every year she thinks about making it her last, and every year she ends up looking at the dresses she wants to order for next season. That is the kind of shop it is: small, family-owned, and still choosing the next prom season's gowns by hand.

For students, the reach is mostly the two high schools that share China Grove's town limits, Jesse C. Carson High School and South Rowan High School. Families also come in from across the Rowan-Salisbury system, from Salisbury High, East Rowan in Granite Quarry, West Rowan in Mount Ulla and North Rowan in Spencer, and from A.L. Brown High School just south in Kannapolis. Many of them would rather take the country roads to China Grove than spend a day at the mall, and the trip puts them in front of someone who has been fitting local proms since 1992. It is one of the longer-running prom stops on this site's list for central North Carolina.
