Ashe County has one traditional public high school. Ashe County High enrolled 778 students in grades 9 through 12 in 2023–24 — Huskies, purple and silver, with Watauga listed as the rival over the mountain in Boone. The county’s other high school, Ashe County Early College, had 129 students. That is nearly the entire prom market for this corner of northwestern North Carolina, and the closest formalwear floor to both campuses is downtown, at 112 N Jefferson Ave.
The prom side of the store runs on two verified labels: Clarisse and Dave & Johnny. Both are prom-first houses, which matters more here than it would in a city with six dress shops — this is the rack you can put your hands on without leaving the county. The same floor carries Brighton jewelry and shoes, so earrings and heels get settled on the same visit rather than a second trip somewhere else.
The more unusual part is the tux. Pretty ’N Pearls is a Jim’s Formal Wear dealer, and the dealer listing shows tuxedo and suit rental, tuxedo and suit purchase, prom and homecoming dresses, bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses, wedding gowns, veils and women’s shoes under one roof. For a couple from Ashe County High, that means one measurement appointment and one pickup, in the same building, instead of a rental order placed in Boone or Wilkesboro.
Alterations appear to be handled in house. A bride reviewing the shop on WeddingWire described the owner working through her bridesmaids’ dresses and then doing the sewing on site:
“she altered all of our dresses in the shop, for less than most other alterations shops”
That is a wedding review, not a prom one, but in a county where a seamstress is not on every corner, in-house hemming is the difference between buying in March and buying in April.
Two logistics notes worth a phone call before driving:
- The store has announced a second location in Jefferson, next to Southern Scoops, and said bridal gowns moved there. Prom shoppers should confirm which building the gowns are in.
- Jim’s Formal Wear lists hours of 10:00 to 5:30 Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 5:00 Saturday, closed Sunday. A 5:30 close means an after-school visit is tight; Saturday is the realistic window for anyone coming from Sparta, Boone or Mountain City.
Jefferson Avenue is West Jefferson’s main street and the spine of the arts district the Ashe County Arts Council helped establish in 1998. The walking tour covers fifteen murals painted on the downtown buildings, and there are more than a dozen galleries plus craft shops and restaurants in the same few blocks — which is to say a dress appointment here absorbs an afternoon comfortably, and the town is at its busiest during Christmas in July, when the festival pulls in more than 20,000 visitors.
If nothing on the rack works, the nearest comparable option is South’s Clothiers in the Boone Mall on Blowing Rock Road, which covers bridal, prom and formalwear; North Wilkesboro has bridal shops as well. Both are a drive out of the county, and both mean a second trip when a hem needs to come up.
