Ponca City High School holds its prom at the Marland Mansion. Oklahoma towns do prom in gymnasiums and event centers; Po-Hi does it in a 1920s oil baron’s house on Monument Road, and the 2025 dance put the Grand March at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, with community members turning out to watch the students come through. Frocks & Fashions sits about two miles west of that, on the 200 block of East Grand Avenue downtown.
The store is there because of a drive to Oklahoma City. Owner Roxane Denton’s mother, Edie Denton, took her to OKC to shop for her first formal dress in ninth grade because there was no local boutique, and opened Frocks & Fashions in downtown Blackwell after that trip. Edie ran it for 25 years. Roxane took over about 16 years ago and moved the business to Ponca City. It spent 11 years in the 400 block of Grand before relocating five years ago — a move that took a specially outfitted rental truck and more than 2,000 dresses, with other downtown business owners lending their dressing rooms for fittings while the new space was being finished.
That move matters if you are typing the address into a phone. Older listings, including this directory’s record and the BBB profile, still show 401 E. Grand. The current storefront is 213 E. Grand Ave., a few doors from Merrick’s and Go Lightly Chiropractic on the same block.
What’s actually on the racks
Roxane told Ponca City Monthly the shop keeps over 600 prom dresses in stock, plus more than 200 bridal gowns. The prom labels verified on brand retailer locators are Alyce Paris, Clarisse and Dave & Johnny. If nothing on the floor is right, there are 15 to 20 designer catalogs to order from.
Lead times, as the store described them in 2025:
- Special-order dress: about five days in most cases
- Ordered tuxedo: about three days
- Alterations: handled by two local specialists the store has worked with for years, not in-house
There is a permanent sale section along the back left wall, built out in summer 2024 and added to every season. Roxane has said she buys with local budgets in mind rather than stocking to a price point the market won’t carry.
February and April are both busy here
The Marland Mansion also hosts the Ponca City Father-Daughter Dance — the 21st annual is set for February 7, 2026, open to girls 13 and under. Frocks stocks around 600 dresses in little-girl sizes for it. Two dances, one building, two entirely different sets of customers walking into the same store two months apart.
For the boys, the shop is a Jim’s Formal Wear affiliate: measurements taken in store, tuxes ordered for rental with shirts, ties and shoes. Small sizes are sold outright, which Roxane says runs cheaper than renting them.
Who drives in
Ponca City is the largest city in Kay County, and Po-Hi enrolled about 1,456 students in grades 9–12 in 2023–24 — a 6A school in a county of roughly 43,700 people. Blackwell, where the store started, is about 20 minutes north; Tonkawa, Newkirk, Kildare and Peckham are all inside a half hour. The nearest cluster of competing formalwear shops is Stillwater, 42 miles south on US-177, about 45 minutes each way.
As of a spring 2025 profile, hours ran Tuesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bridal appointments run about two hours and are worth booking; prom shopping is walk-in, but call ahead at (580) 762-2444 in March and April.
