Beaver Falls High School is at 1701 8th Avenue. Cable Creations is at 1605 7th Avenue — the next avenue down, a block over, close enough that a Tiger can walk from last period to a fitting room. The 480 students in the Big Beaver Falls Area district are the shop’s closest customers, and the shop is about as close as a prom store gets to a school anywhere in Pennsylvania.
The complication is that 15010 is a shared ZIP. Blackhawk High School, out on Blackhawk Road in Chippewa Township, uses a Beaver Falls mailing address too, and its 763 Cougars are Beaver Falls’ WPIAL rival. So do New Brighton students, across the river, who are the other name in that rivalry. One store, three student bodies that keep track of each other, and every prom photo eventually lands on the same phones.
Which is why the detail that comes up in reviews here is not the selection. It’s the register. Customers writing on The Knot describe the shop refusing to sell the same gown to two girls at the same school for the same event — the rule that actually matters when your prom is 200 people who have known each other since kindergarten. If you shop out at a mall, nobody is tracking that for you.
What’s on the racks
House of Wu and Tiffany Designs, its prom label, both list Cable Creations on their official retailer locators. The store’s own prom page also features Ellie Wilde, and describes the prom stock as size inclusive. The same page is straightforward about the limits of a small floor: not every gown is in the store, so ask about special orders — which means the girl who wants a specific style needs to come in weeks earlier than the girl buying off the rack.
The shop is a full formalwear operation, not prom-only: bridal, bridesmaids, mothers’ gowns, flower girl dresses, veils, headpieces, jewelry, gown preservation, and tuxedo and suit rentals. It is a Jim’s Formal Wear dealer, so a prom date renting here is on the same system his cousin used for a wedding.
Before you drive over
Two things to know about how the store runs:
- Prom is walk-in. You can browse gowns any time the doors are open; an appointment is optional if you want someone working with you the whole time.
- Bridal gowns and tux or suit rentals require an appointment. Tuxedo returns are Monday afternoons, 4:00 to 6:00.
The open week is short and weighted toward midweek and Thursday evening — the Jim’s Formal Wear listing shows it closed Sunday through Tuesday. Call (724) 843-6980 before you leave the house rather than assuming a Saturday afternoon works; hours at a shop this size shift with the season.
The draw runs wider than the two rival schools. Beaver County has eleven public high schools inside a short drive of downtown Beaver Falls — Riverside, Central Valley, Freedom, Hopewell, Rochester, South Side, Western Beaver, Midland, plus Lincoln Park’s charter in Midland — and none of them is more than half an hour out. Cable Creations also gets named by parents further southeast: on Nextdoor, a Cranberry Township mother who had already tried The Winner and One Enchanted Evening was pointed here, alongside a Sewickley shop. Across 104 reviews aggregated from Google and elsewhere, the store averages 4.7.
Its own website marks a 43rd anniversary. An older Jim’s Formal Wear write-up of the same shop counted 32 years, which puts the opening in the early 1980s — long enough that the woman handing you a gown may have sold one to your mother.
