Monroeville Mall now has an end date. Walmart bought the property in 2025 for $34 million, has applied for a $7.5 million state redevelopment grant to demolish the enclosed mall, and has told tenants they can stay through April 2027. Unit 212, on the mall’s directory as The Dress Shop, is selling prom and homecoming gowns in the meantime — six days a week, 12:30 to 7 on weekdays and noon to 7 on Saturday.
This shop has moved before. It opened in March 2013 at Pittsburgh Mills and relocated to Monroeville Mall in 2019. If prom season 2027 happens somewhere else in western Pennsylvania, that would be the second move, not the first.
The dress register is the reason to go
The Dress Shop records which school each gown goes to and will not sell the same style twice into that school. That policy is only worth something if the store knows the schools, and the density around Monroeville is what makes it work. Gateway High School sits about two miles away on Gateway Campus Boulevard and enrolls roughly 1,150 students from Monroeville and Pitcairn. Plum, Penn Hills, Woodland Hills, Penn-Trafford and Franklin Regional in Murrysville all pull from inside a short drive. Six or seven proms, one store, one register.
Ask them to write your school down when you buy. That is the whole mechanism, and it only protects you if it gets recorded.

The shop’s own site adds JVN by Jovani, Rachel Allan, Primavera, Nox Anabel and Cecilia Couture to that list, says it keeps prom stock on the floor in sizes 00 through 30, and carries quinceañera and pageant styles alongside the prom racks. There is also a men’s side — reception and party jackets and accessories in the showroom, not a full tuxedo wall. The store says it offers payment plans.
Its Google rating is 4.0 across 25 reviews, which is a small sample. The testimonial the shop runs on its own homepage names a saleswoman, Carmella, that returning customers ask for by name.
Getting there
Monroeville is about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh, and the mall is one of the easiest buildings in the region to reach: Turnpike Exit 57 feeds straight into I-376, and Business Route 22 runs the retail strip past the front door. The mall has 6,800 parking spaces and is losing tenants as the 2027 deadline gets closer — American Eagle closed in January 2026 — so the lot is not the problem it once was. Park near the Macy’s or JCPenney end and walk in.
Two practical notes on timing. The store is closed Sundays most of the year, but in September, during homecoming, it has opened Sundays from 12 to 4. And Monroeville Mall is the building where Dawn of the Dead was filmed in 1978, which means it draws horror-film pilgrims and the annual Living Dead Weekend, and the crowds have grown as the demolition news has spread. A Saturday in April is a busy day here for reasons that have nothing to do with prom.
