L&H Bridal RACK

Prom gowns in sizes 0 to 36 that can go home with you the day you find them

Alterations available

Off the rack is the whole idea at L&H Bridal RACK. The family behind it has been fitting brides since 1975 and also runs L&H Bridal on York Road in Jenkintown and L&H Couture in Doylestown. This Berks County store on Penn Avenue is the one built for buying a gown and carrying it out the door, and it is also where L&H keeps its prom dresses. The company's own summary of the showroom lists wedding gowns, mothers' dresses, bridesmaids and prom gowns, "all available to take home the same day."

The prom room, label by label

Sizes run from 0 to 36. Silhouettes go from sleek fitted gowns to full ballgowns, and the colors from deep jewel tones to soft pastels. Some styles hang in the store, ready to try, and others can be ordered. Three labels get top billing on the prom page.

  • Christina Wu Prom, the House of Wu's prom line, known for rich fabrics and heavy beading
  • Lucci Lu, a designer whose signature is intricate beading and detailed embroidery
  • Athena Prom, the label the store points plus-size shoppers toward

Keep that size range in mind. A girl who wears a 28 can pull dresses in the same fitting area as a friend in a 4, and a stylist can steer her to Athena if she wants a label built around plus sizes.

The stylists also help with the finishing pieces. The RACK's home page says they help shoppers choose accessories, and the prom page describes gown specialists who ask about style, body shape and the picture a shopper has in her head before anything comes off the hanger.

Our team knows every dress in our store, so you can trust us to find the perfect fit.

That line sits on the store's prom page, and it describes the best version of off-the-rack shopping. The person helping you knows what is hanging there in your size today, not what might arrive on a special order.

A Berks County option on Penn Avenue

The shop is on Penn Avenue (Route 422) in Sinking Spring, on the western edge of the Reading suburbs. Penn Avenue is the same road that runs east through Wyomissing and West Reading into the city, so for families on the west side of the county the store is on a familiar route. Prom shoppers from Wilson High School, Governor Mifflin High School, Conrad Weiser High School and Reading High School have a full prom room in their own county. The RACK's home page counts brides from Reading, Pottstown, Lancaster, Phoenixville and Ephrata among its customers.

Booking

Send a request online, then the store calls or emails to set the actual date and time.

Payment plan

The RACK's layaway takes a down payment and spreads the balance over monthly installments. The site describes it for bridal gowns, so ask about prom.

Fit

An in-house seamstress adjusts off-the-rack gowns for a custom feel.

For a date

Tuxedo rentals are part of this location's lineup.

Prom is not the only reason people come in. The same floor holds designer wedding gowns from Demetrios, Pronovias and Sottero & Midgley, mothers' dresses, bridesmaids, quinceañera ball gowns with private one-on-one consultations, and evening dresses from Adrianna Papell and Christina Wu's Celebration and Elegance lines, pitched on the evening page at galas and black-tie events.

For more options in the region, the Pennsylvania prom shop guide lists Berks County stores alongside the Lehigh Valley and the coal region.

Two questions about prom at the RACK

Can a RACK prom dress be altered before the dance?

Yes. The store's pages describe an in-house seamstress who alters off-the-rack dresses for a custom fit. L&H's alterations page also welcomes gowns bought at the RACK at its Jenkintown and Doylestown locations, where the owner, Lucy, heads the sewing team.

Which label should a plus-size prom shopper ask to see?

Athena Prom is the one to ask for. The store highlights it for plus-size prom gowns, and the full prom range goes up to size 36.
