The address is 7201 Mt. Rushmore Rd, Suite 400 — several miles south of downtown Rapid City, in a building the shop shares with Salt Block Burgers & Brews. The windows face the foothills with the Black Hills behind them, and there is a platform to stand on when someone wants a photo of the gown. There are no posted walk-in hours. Everything runs on booked appointments, made online or at (605) 791-1900.
The shop is new. Owner Baylee Diede grew up in Spearfish, learned alterations doing costume work while in college on a theater scholarship, and worked in finance and healthcare before opening Pure Bridal in 2025. She spent more than two years buying gowns before the doors opened, working markets in Chicago and Atlanta. Prom and pageant are part of the plan, not an afterthought: the racks cover bridal, prom, pageant, and mother-of-the-bride.
The brands, and why they matter here
Three prom labels are confirmed through the designers’ own retailer lists: Jovani, Jessica Angel, and Johnathan Kayne. Jovani counts only four authorized retailers in the whole state, two of them in the Black Hills — this store and Kathleens on North Main Street in Spearfish.
That scarcity is the practical point. Bridal and prom designers assign territories, so a store cannot simply stock whatever it likes. Diede has said outright that the designers she carries are different from the ones at Audra’s Bridal in Rapid City or Bridal Boutique in Spearfish. For a junior who does not want to walk into the gym and meet her own dress, that division is useful information: driving to two shops in western South Dakota genuinely shows you two different sets of gowns, not the same catalog twice.
Rather than buy full lines, she brings in samplings from more designers, which is how a young store in a small market ends up with range. She described wanting “the glitz and the glam and a little bit of the Yellowstone Western” on the same floor, alongside vintage-leaning and modest cuts.
What an appointment looks like
Downstairs, two parties of four can sit and watch while someone tries on gowns; the shop’s own site says larger groups are welcome but may end up standing. Upstairs there is a VIP room described for bridal parties — three hours, a personal stylist, up to 14 people, hors d’oeuvres catered from the burger place downstairs, and a blackberry lemon spritz if nobody brought champagne. Whether that room can be booked for a prom group is a question worth asking when you call.
Who drives here
Rapid City Central sits at 433 Mt. Rushmore Road, the north end of the same street. Stevens is on 44th Street, closer to this end of town. St. Thomas More is on Fairmont Boulevard, Rapid City Christian out on Arena Drive south of the city. Add Ellsworth Air Force Base families in Box Elder and the ranch and reservation communities that treat Rapid City as their shopping trip — Pine Ridge is 93 miles down the road.
That is the whole calculation for formalwear out here. Rapid City is the retail center for a stretch of country reaching into northeastern Wyoming and northwestern Nebraska. If nothing in town works, the next real option east is Sioux Falls: 347 miles, about five and a half hours on I-90. An appointment two months before prom is cheaper than that drive.
