The run climbs from 000 to 24, and it follows Kayne's own sizing, not the size you usually buy. A fitted, beaded gown leaves no room for guessing. Try one on at the shop before you commit to a number.

What a shop can pull for you is narrower. The brand stocks 00 to 16. Any other size, 000 included, along with 18 to 24, is a special order, and the brand's FAQ adds a fee for design surcharges. Not every seller passes that fee on. Some price the whole run the same. So ask the shop what your size will cost before you settle on a style. The main collection has no separately named plus line. Tall? Long styles are cut to one standard length, so try the gown on in your prom heels and talk length with the shop before an order goes in. Between two sizes, shops usually say to take the larger, since a gown can be taken in but not let out.

Johnathan Kayne for Sydney's Closet grew out of a trade show. At World of Prom in Atlanta, Kayne's showroom shared a hallway with the one run by Sydney's Closet founder Phyllis Brasch Librach. They swapped what each room lacked. His side offered the computer and printer she needed for shipping labels. She had a sink and a refrigerator.

Those favors became a design partnership, as the Sydney's Closet press release tells it. Sketching began in the fall of 2018. A 16-piece capsule called Dangerous Curves Ahead went before buyers at AmericasMart in August 2019, and the first gowns hung in shops in January 2020. The result sells as a pageant-style collection on the Sydney's Closet size chart, starting at size 10.

Gowns are sold through privately owned authorized boutiques, in the US and abroad. Your shop can special order any size in the run, for the added fee, and for sizing the run doesn't cover, the brand points shoppers to its Custom Design department. It publishes no special-order lead time, so get a target delivery date from the shop before any deposit changes hands.

Returns run through the store, too. If a dress has a problem, contact the shop that sold it, and the shop takes it up with the brand. Rules differ by retailer, so get your shop's policy in writing.

There's no published prom release date. The brand shows new designs to store buyers at Atlanta Apparel and the Chicago market each April and August, and its catalog runs to roughly 300 styles across all its lines. Fell for one that isn't on the rack? Ask whether the shop ordered that season, and whether a special order would arrive in time for your prom.

Sometimes the designer has come to the shop. Kayne has made trunk show tours of authorized retailers for years, and at some stops shoppers got to meet him. In 2013 he pulled up to a prom shop in Oswego, Illinois, in a limo and met fans over breakfast the next morning. In 2021 he spent a day at a bridal shop in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, helping local girls pick prom and pageant dresses. If meeting him matters to you, ask your shop whether it has hosted a Kayne trunk show and whether another is planned.

Real prices give you a yardstick. Authorized sellers put most full-price gowns between about $480 and $700, so a new beaded style listed at a fraction of that, outside a shop's own sale section, deserves a hard second look.

The label follows the pageant circuit. Store after store across the South files it under prom and pageant at once, which suits a shopper hoping one gown can work for the dance and the stage. Among the shops listed here, four go deeper than most:

Television is the best-documented part of the story. On season 3 of Project Runway in 2006, Kayne's team won the challenge to dress Miss USA Tara Conner, and she wore the winning gown at Miss Universe 2006. He later called it the highlight of his career. He finished in the top five, then came back for Project Runway All Stars in 2012 and again in 2023. His bio adds a 2009 TLC special, Gown Crazy, and appearances on E!, ABC, NBC and Bravo.

One red-carpet credit checks out in the press. Bunnie Xo wore a Johnathan Kayne lace catsuit to Spotify's Best New Artist party before the 2024 Grammys. The rest of the list comes from the brand. Kayne's bio names Jennifer Lopez, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson and Britney Spears among his clients. His 2023 Bravo cast bio adds Elle King. It's a country-heavy list. That fits a Nashville label.

Pageants are the steadier stage. The brand says it designed the opening-number looks for Miss USA and Miss Teen USA in 2025, and that contestants wore its gowns for their 2026 headshots with Georgina Vaughan Photography, one from every state and DC. The brand also names Miss USA, Miss California USA and Mrs. United States among its pageant partners.
