For about a quarter century this business operated in Emmetsburg, up in northwest Iowa, under a different name. It was called A Heavenly Celebration, and it worked out of a historic church that had been reimagined as a bridal boutique; in 2024 it reopened in Historic Valley Junction, West Des Moines, as Celebrations Couture. Yelp’s listing dates the West Des Moines shop to 2024 and the Emmetsburg store to 2000.
The other thing worth knowing about who runs it: the owner came to formalwear after nearly 25 years in education, as both a teacher and a school administrator. She told the West Des Moines Chamber that she stocks wedding gowns in sizes 4 through 28 in store, and at the time of that 2024 interview had 50 gowns in sizes 18 to 28 on the racks to try on. That figure is about bridal, not prom, but the approach to sizing is the same idea, and it is a specific claim rather than a slogan.
How prom works here, mechanically
Prom and homecoming are the two things you can walk in for. The shop’s FAQ says appointments are required for bridal, mother of the bride/groom and evening wear, and tux or suit fittings — but not for prom and homecoming. If a boy in the group needs a tux from the same shop, that part does need to be booked.
They also run a registry. A prom dress bought here is registered to your school, and they will not sell the same dress in your color to anyone else attending that prom. Worth asking about at the register if you care about walking into the gym alone in your gown, since a registry only covers dresses sold by that store.
Alterations are not done in house. The store keeps a referral list of independent seamstresses — in Urbandale, Ames, Ankeny and Altoona — so budget a second trip somewhere else for the hem. Ask for that list before you leave.
On labels: Amarra, Johnathan Kayne and Terani all list this store on their own retailer locators. The shop’s own prom page also shows Dave and Johnny, Portia & Scarlett, Primavera and Rachel Allan. Tuxedos and suits are available to rent or buy.
Valley Junction, and getting there in April
The address is a main-street storefront, not a suburban strip. 5th Street is the spine of Valley Junction — galleries, boutiques and restaurants, with an arts festival in spring — so a dress trip here can be a couple of hours rather than fifteen minutes in a parking lot. Street parking is the norm and it fills up on nice evenings.
One scheduling note specific to this block: the Valley Junction Farmers Market runs Thursday evenings from 4 to 8, May through September, and 5th Street is closed off between the 100 and 300 blocks for vendors. That closure reaches the shop’s own block. If your prom is in May and you are coming on a Thursday afternoon, park north of the closure or come another day.
The high schools closest to this door are Valley and Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines and Roosevelt across the river in Des Moines. Waukee, Waukee Northwest, Urbandale, Johnston and Norwalk are all a short drive on I‑235 or the Waukee side of the metro.
Is it worth the drive?
Honestly, that depends on what you want out of the trip. Central Iowa has the largest concentration of prom retailers in the state, including stores in Urbandale, Indianola and Boone, and the metro also has department-store and chain options. So the case for Celebrations Couture is not that it is the only rack around. It is a small, family-owned shop where prom does not require an appointment, the dress gets registered against your classmates’, and the person who sold it to you spent 25 years working in schools.
