New prom stock starts landing at Affinity Bridals in November, months before most Warren County juniors have a date or a theme. The family-run shop, open since 1991 on the southwest corner of the courthouse square in downtown Indianola, says hundreds of prom gowns arrive that early, and it points shoppers to December through February as the window with the deepest selection.

The name says bridal, and the wedding business is real: gowns, bridesmaids, mothers' dresses, veils and preservation. But prom has its own page, its own FAQ section and its own pricing, and the shop draws Indianola, Norwalk and south-side Des Moines families. Highway 65/69 runs straight into town from the metro, and the drive ends in a one-way loop around the courthouse.

Prices, sizes and one designer by name

For families across central Iowa setting a budget before the first try-on, Affinity puts its prom numbers right in its FAQ:

• Most prom gowns fall between $289 and $450.
• The full prom range runs from $229 to $650.
• A separate selection is priced at $199 and under.
• Financing is offered on wedding and prom dresses, with approvals up to $5,000.

The prom page carries the Jovani logo, and the photos the shop posts run from floral A-lines and one-shoulder styles to plus-size gowns and high slits. The About page lists gown sizes from 0 to 30, with some companies able to make a custom fit above that. Jewelry and accessories sit in the same store, so earrings can be chosen while the dress is still on. Because Affinity works like a boutique, the floor usually holds one size of each style, and the shop special orders your size and color once you choose.

The site also spends a surprising amount of space warning shoppers about counterfeit dresses sold online. The point is a fair one for prom: a knockoff that arrives late or looks nothing like the photo leaves very little time to recover before the Grand March.

The registry and the seamstress

Duplicate dresses are a real worry in a district with one high school. Affinity's answer sits in its prom FAQ, under the question of whether it will sell the same gown to someone else going to your prom.

That rule matters at Indianola High School, the only high school in town, and it matters just as much for students from Carlisle, Norwalk and Southeast Warren who shop the same racks.

The other half of the service is fit. Alterations happen on site with the store's own in-house seamstress, and the alterations page stresses that a gown never leaves the building. For prom and other non-bridal dresses, the FAQ suggests starting fittings about four to six weeks before the wear date and bringing the shoes and undergarments that will go with the gown. Two or three fittings is typical. Alterations are priced separately from the gown, charged only for the work you need, and quoted before the seamstress begins. Even rush jobs, the store says, will be done before your event.

Tuxedos for the date

A prom couple can finish the whole order at one counter. Affinity rents tuxedos, sells suits, and offers free tuxedo measuring.

The tuxedo page opens with a capital-letter reminder not to forget your prom date, and the FAQ says the shop can match the date's vest and tie to the color of the dress, drawing on more than one tuxedo company for color choices.

For local families, the square and Simpson College are the landmarks everyone already knows. For metro shoppers coming down from Des Moines Lincoln or the south-side neighborhoods along SE 14th, the store's own directions follow the same road the whole way down. Bridal visits need an appointment. Outside bridal, the FAQ's own line is that walk-ins are welcome and appointments are adored.
