Alexa Smith was a teenager when she started asking for a job at Dresses & Dreams, and by her own account she kept asking until the store said yes. She worked there through high school and college, and on January 1, 2012, at 25, she bought the place. The seller was Judy Russ, who had run it before her; when the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting in March 2018 for the store’s expansion and relocation within downtown, the announcement framed it as Smith following in Russ’s footsteps.
That matters mostly because of what it tells you about the store’s age. Dresses and Dreams did not start in 2012. The store’s own history says it has been part of Douglas for more than five decades, which puts it in business here longer than most of the parents now bringing daughters in.
Where it sits
216 S. Peterson Avenue is downtown, and Peterson is not a side street. US 441 splits into a one-way pair as it comes through Douglas: northbound traffic runs on Madison Avenue, southbound on South Peterson. So the shop faces the lanes carrying everyone headed south out of town toward Willacoochee and Valdosta. Heritage Station Museum is a few blocks away on West Ward Street, which is useful context for how compact this district is — you park once and walk.
For families across this part of south Georgia, the drive math is what decides things. Tifton is 45 miles northwest. Valdosta is 61 miles by road, about an hour and fifteen minutes down 441. Douglas is the shopping town for Coffee County and reachable in well under an hour from Hazlehurst, Pearson, Alma and Ocilla, which is a large trade area for one downtown storefront to serve.
The nearby student base is real: Coffee High School on Trojan Way enrolled about 1,320 students in 2023-24, drawing from Douglas, Broxton, Nicholls and Ambrose. Faith Christian Academy is also in town, and Jeff Davis High in Hazlehurst is roughly half an hour up the road.

That is a prom-and-pageant lineup, and the store’s own catalog is organized accordingly — Jovani’s pageant line and Ashley Lauren’s kids collection sit alongside the prom groups, plus Portia and Scarlett and children’s wear. Its social accounts describe the business as homecoming, prom and pageant, in that order, and pageant families are a working part of the calendar here, not a sideline.
The one thing the store says about itself that is worth repeating: it does not treat gowns as fixed. Its description of the work includes changing details, combining elements from different dresses and reworking a gown so no one else has the same one. If you want a dress altered past hemming, ask about it on the first visit rather than after you buy.

Posted hours are Monday through Friday 11:00 to 6:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 4:00, closed Sunday. The store also ships nationwide, though for a first prom dress the fitting is the reason to come in person.
