The address says Gateway Mall, 6100 O Street, which sends first-timers walking the mall corridors looking for a store that is not there. Lincoln Formal sits on the outside of the building, under the covered parking lot between Dick’s Sporting Goods and Burlington. The store spells it out on its own site: west side of the covered lot, next door to The Cookie Company. Park under the roof and you are at the door, which matters in February when you are carrying a garment bag.
Gateway is the only enclosed shopping center in Nebraska’s capital city, sitting on O Street at about 61st. The boutique has moved along that same street before — a Lincoln business journal reported it leasing space in Meridian Park at 6900 O Street in September 2021 — and it is back at Gateway now.
What things cost and how the store works
The store answers the money question directly in its own FAQ, which is more than most boutiques do:
- Long gowns run roughly $200 to $600. The store makes a point of not stocking anything over $700, but will order above that if you want it.
- Short dresses run about $75 to $200.
- Stock sizes run 00 through 24, and the store carries Sydney’s Closet, a line cut for curvier customers that runs larger than the rest of the floor.
- If your size is not on the rack and the vendor has it, the store says it can usually get a dress in about a week.
- All sales are final. No returns, no exchanges. The store does not buy used dresses from the public.
No appointment is needed to shop for a dress. Tux and suit rentals do require one. Hours change month to month and by season — a recent September had the store closed Mondays, open 1 to 5 midweek and 11 to 7 on Saturday — so call (402) 477-0055 before you drive in.
Nine designers list this shop on their official retailer locators: Alyce Paris, Amarra, Clarisse, Dave & Johnny, Faviana, Jessica Angel, Johnathan Kayne, Jovani and Mac Duggal. The store’s own catalog adds Ellie Wilde, Primavera Couture, Ladivine, Nox Anabel and others, plus off-the-rack bridal. It does not stock traditional mother-of-the-bride dresses.
Which schools shop here
Most stores make you guess at their trade area. This one publishes it. Lincoln Formal runs a student ambassador program, and the current roster names Lincoln East, Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln Southwest, Lincoln High, Standing Bear, Lincoln Lutheran, Norris, Seward and Palmyra.
That list tracks with the map. Lincoln East is under a mile south of the mall on 70th Street. Standing Bear, which opened in 2023, is farther down the same road at 70th and Saltillo. Pius X is about a mile southwest at 60th and A. Then the ring outside town: Norris in Firth, Palmyra out Highway 2 to the southeast, Seward roughly half an hour west on I-80. For those families, the O Street corridor is the shopping trip anyway.
Lincoln Public Schools does not hold one prom on one night. KLKN’s coverage of a recent season had North Star, Northeast and Southeast on one Saturday, East and Southwest the next, and Lincoln High the weekend after. Small-town schools south and east of Lincoln run their own dates. The practical effect is that the busy stretch here spans several weekends of April and early May rather than one, and the shopping starts well before it.
The owner is Lori Black, who is from Lincoln and says she started the business after a friend who ran a local dress shop moved away and left the gap. The manager, Chris, is a retired teacher.
