How a pop-up became a prom floor
Southern Belles began in 2012 as something every Knoxville parent will recognize: a weekend consignment sale, modeled on the kids' clothing pop-ups, except the racks held sequins and satin instead of toddler jeans. The shop's own history traces what happened next. The weekend event stretched into a three-month season, then into a year-round store on North Forest Park Boulevard. For years it was Southern Belles Closet, a place to buy and sell gently worn gowns.
That chapter is closed. The store has retired consignment entirely, dropped "Closet" from its name, and now stocks over 2,500 brand-new, name-brand prom and pageant gowns. Joy Sabo has owned and run it since 2012, and the site describes Southern Belles as woman owned and woman operated, with a team she signs off on as "Joy & The Southern Belles Crew." The site also bills the shop as East Tennessee's largest prom, pageant, homecoming and bridal store.
For a prom shopper, the switch changes one specific thing. The old consignment model meant you were shopping whatever the community had brought in. The new model means current-season styles, in multiple sizes, from designers the store names on its own site. The prom size filter on the site runs from 000 up through 32.
What's on the racks
The homepage leads its prom pitch by naming Ava Presley, Portia and Scarlett Couture and Jovani as headline designers.

That promise follows the designer names on the homepage, and its last clause is what brings a lot of families across town. There is no special-order wait for in-stock gowns. If the dress fits and the price works, it goes home in the car.
The designer page rounds out the list with Colors Dress, Atria Couture, Alyce Paris, Nox Anabel, Juliet Dresses, Johnathan Kayne and Sugar Kayne Kids, Sydney's Closet and Primavera. The new-arrivals carousel and a dedicated homecoming collection also feature Sherri Hill. Several of those labels design pageant gowns as well as prom, which suits a store that serves both prom and pageant shoppers.
Pageant is a real second specialty here, not an afterthought. The store runs one-on-one pageant prep sessions covering walking, posing, interview confidence and gown selection, and it offers a judging certificate class led by pageant coach Frances Brooks. The site says its styling comes from pageant winners. A student shopping prom this spring with an eye on a first local pageant next fall will already know the staff.
There is also a society-season angle. Southern Belles has been the official dress sponsor of the Knoxville Teen Board for two years running, and keeps a selection of white and pastel dresses for the Teen Board's Presentation Dance. The staff say they know the group's rules on colors, slit lengths and necklines, which saves a lot of guesswork.
Bridal has its own side of the store, with more than 600 off-the-rack gowns and appointment-only fittings, but prom, pageant and homecoming lead everything else on the site, from the homepage carousel to the walk-in policy.
Walking in versus booking ahead
Prom, pageant and homecoming shoppers can walk in. The site says so on nearly every page. If you would rather have a stylist's undivided attention, especially during the late-winter crush when students from West High School, Central High School, Hardin Valley Academy, Powell High School and Halls High School are all shopping the same few weekends, the store offers paid appointments.
