The origin story here is unusual enough to be worth knowing before you drive over. East Tennessee parents will recognize the format: a pop-up consignment sale, run over a weekend, the same model used for kids’ clothing and gear sales all over Knox County. In 2012 Joy Sabo applied it to formalwear instead, taking in gently used prom, pageant and wedding gowns from local families. That weekend event stretched into a three-month season, and the season eventually turned into a year-round store at 146 N Forest Park Blvd.
The consignment side is now gone. The store retired it, dropped “Closet” from the name, and rebuilt the floor around new inventory: 2,500-plus brand-new prom and pageant gowns and more than 600 off-the-rack bridal dresses. That matters practically. Everything is in stock with tags on it, so a dress you try on is a dress you take home the same day, with no eight-to-twelve-week order window. If prom is three weeks out and the shop you called first wants a special order, this is the relevant difference.
Brands on the racks
Four labels list this store on their own official retailer locators: Alyce Paris, Ava Presley, Johnathan Kayne and Jovani. Johnathan Kayne is a Tennessee line — designer Kayne Gillaspie built the label out of Nashville after opening a boutique there in the early 2000s — and it leans pageant and stage, which fits how this store is set up.
The pageant business is not an afterthought. The shop sells one-on-one prep sessions covering walking, posing, interview and gown choice for a $25 fee, and runs a judging-certificate class with pageant coach Frances Brooks for $40. If your daughter is competing rather than just going to a dance, that is a different conversation than most dress shops will have with you.
Bearden, and who shops here
The address sits in the shopping strip at Kingston Pike and Forest Park Blvd, in the middle of the Bearden district — a surface lot, an Ace Hardware in the same center, no mall garage to circle. Bearden High School, with about 2,000 students, is roughly three miles west on the same road; Farragut High, its longtime rival, is further out Kingston Pike at 11237. West High, Knoxville Catholic, Webb and the Hardin Valley and Karns schools are all a short drive. Kingston Pike is also a formalwear corridor: The Gilded Gown, the other large prom and bridal store in town, is a few miles west at 8435, which makes a two-stop afternoon realistic if the first shop does not work out.
Bridal runs on different rules
Prom, pageant and homecoming shopping is walk-in. Bridal is not, and the terms are published in advance:
- Appointments required, with a non-refundable booking fee — $25 Monday through Friday and Sundays during business hours, $50 on Saturdays, closed days, or outside operating hours.
- Appointments run 1.5 hours. Staff pull the gowns, not guests.
- Up to four guests recommended; children must stay seated with an adult.
- No holds, all sales final, payment plans available.
- You can drop in and browse the 600-plus bridal gowns without an appointment before you book a fitting.
Menswear is handled through Jim’s Formal Wear, which lists the store as a rental dealer, so a tux order and a dress can happen on one trip.
Timing
Knox County proms cluster in early spring — the district’s own school pages had Gibbs High’s 2025 junior/senior prom on Friday, April 4 at the Mill and Mine downtown — which means the serious shopping months are January and February, when a store selling only in-stock gowns is at its fullest. Off-season, listed hours skip Tuesday and Thursday, and the shop publishes hours a month or two at a time, so call before a long drive in August. It also recruits student homecoming ambassadors and a Knoxville teen board, which is how a lot of high schoolers here first hear about the place.
