Larissa Maner was three years old when she decided what she wanted to do. "I've watched pageants all my life," she told the Dallas Observer in 2017. "When I was little, I watched them. I was 3 years old and loved the evening gown portion of it and one day, I said, 'I want to dress someone from Miss America.'" She never competed herself. She taught herself the business instead, and by her 40s she was dressing contestants for Miss America.

That is the background behind Shimmer Boutique, the prom and pageant shop Maner owns and runs on North Garden Ridge Boulevard in Lewisville. When the Observer profiled her, the shop was in Carrollton and had just put Miss Belize in an evening gown for the Miss Universe pageant, a custom piece by designer Fernando Wong that was chosen from a swatch of fabric. The shop was also a sponsor of the Miss Texas organization. It has since moved north to Lewisville.

For a prom shopper, that history counts for more than it might seem. A shop that fits women for a national stage tends to know a lot about how a dress moves, photographs and holds up over a long night.

Prom first, pageant close behind

The site's tagline calls Shimmer "America's Favorite Prom & Pageant Store," and its About section describes the shop as a top retailer for prom, pageant and homecoming. The designer menu backs that up. It is a long list, and the site sorts its designers the way the shop actually sells.

The online catalog also lets you filter prom styles by silhouette and detail, from feather and boho dresses to two-pieces and plus sizes, and its size filter runs from 000 to 32 with women's sizes beyond that. It is a useful way to build a short list before a visit. The personal side is the other half of the pitch. According to the About page, the shop can special order and custom design pageant wardrobes, and it promises "a personal shopping experience when you come to my store." Why the pageant habits help at prom

Maner's comments to the Observer explain how she thinks about a gown. She said a woman's personality plays a big role in what she ends up wearing, and that most women try on about four dresses before finding the one. For national pageants, she added, a gown is changed so competitors do not recognize it: "We want it to be something different, unique and original." Prom is not Miss USA, but the instinct carries over. The goal is a dress that looks like you, not like the photo everyone else saved.

The site lists pageant credits across many systems, including Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Universe, Miss Texas America and Miss Texas International, with title holders from Miss America to Miss Belize. Younger shoppers also get their own corner: there is a little girl pageant section, and pageant swimwear from Jamye Shaw for contestants who need the full wardrobe.

Shimmer's location puts it inside Lewisville ISD, a big district with big senior classes. Lewisville High School, Marcus and Flower Mound high schools, Hebron in Carrollton and The Colony High School are all a reasonable drive, and Coppell High School is just to the south.
