Highland Colony Parkway explains most of this store. Angie’s is in Suite 1005 at 1000 Highland Colony Parkway, inside Renaissance at Colony Park, the open-air center built at the northwest corner of I-55 and Old Agency Road in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Stay on that same parkway heading north and it runs to 1417 Highland Colony Parkway, which is the front door of Madison Central High School. Turn east off the same interchange instead and you reach 370 Old Agency Road, the North Campus of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, grades five through twelve. Two of the schools whose juniors and seniors buy gowns here sit on the store’s own two roads.
By its own account, Angie opened the shop in 2002. Beyond that, the store keeps a light public record: no news coverage, no interviews, an online catalog and a Facebook page. What it does publish is specific enough to be useful.
It runs on appointments, and on one firm rule
The store asks shoppers to call or book online for what it calls a VIP appointment rather than arriving cold on a Saturday in February. It also states a rule at the fitting room: each girl in high school or younger must have her own parent or legal guardian present to try dresses on. That is worth reading twice before loading up a car. Four friends with one mother between them will not all be trying gowns that afternoon.
Designers, and a separate pageant rack
Four labels list Angie’s on their own official retailer locators: Alyce Paris, Amarra, Ava Presley and Johnathan Kayne. The store’s catalog is organized designer by designer, with Alyce Paris split into its prom, B’Dazzle and Claudine lines, and it keeps a pageant section apart from the prom pages, along with shoes and jewelry — including Johnathan Kayne’s shoe styles.
That pageant section matters more here than it would in most states. The Miss Mississippi competition runs each June at the Vicksburg Convention Center, less than an hour west on I-20; in its 93rd year, 38 women arrived having won local titles across the state, and the Miss Mississippi Teen competition takes over downtown Vicksburg as well. A store an hour from that stage is stocking for competition wear and prom out of the same building, and the two customers want different things from a gown.
The schools in its trade area
Ridgeland sits in the middle of the Jackson metro’s northern suburbs, so the draw is dense rather than distant:
- Madison Central High School, grades 10–12, about 1,250 students, up Highland Colony Parkway in Madison
- Ridgeland High School, grades 9–12, in the Madison County School District
- Germantown High School and Velma Jackson High School, also Madison County schools
- St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, North Campus on Old Agency Road
- Madison-Ridgeland Academy on Old Canton Road, roughly 1,300 students PK–12
- Jackson Preparatory School, Jackson Academy, St. Joseph Catholic School in Madison, and Veritas School in Ridgeland
Several of those are ten to fifteen minutes from Suite 1005, which is the practical argument for shopping here rather than driving to Memphis or the Gulf Coast: a girl can come back for a second look at the same dress before deciding, and again for a fitting.
Planning the visit
Renaissance is a village-style layout of storefronts, sidewalks and restaurants rather than an enclosed mall, so the walk from the car is short but it is outdoors. The center posts hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 to 8 Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 Sunday, with the caveat that individual shops set their own — another reason to confirm an appointment time with the store directly before driving over. If the trip is coming from Vicksburg, Brandon, Clinton or farther out, it is an easy one to pair with dinner in the same few blocks.
