The store opened its doors on January 2, 2008. By its own account, the two Arkansas women who started it had worked together more than ten years and were facing a layoff when they decided to open a formalwear store instead. It is still at 121 East Harrell Drive, Suite 11 — a short commercial street off Arkansas Avenue (Highway 7) on the north side of I-40, sharing the block with the Fairfield Inn, in the town that the chamber of commerce calls the hub city for shopping in the Arkansas River Valley.
What the store actually is: a full-calendar formal shop rather than a prom-only one. Prom, pageant, homecoming, quinceañera, cocktail, bridal, bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride, plus tuxedo rental as a Jim’s Formal Wear dealer. That last part is the practical reason to make the drive from a smaller town — a couple can pick a gown and get measured for a tux without a second trip into Russellville.
What’s on the racks
Dave & Johnny and Jessica Angel both list this store on their official retailer locators. Morilee lists it too, for bridal, bridesmaid and quinceañera. The shop’s own prom page names more designers: Blush, Primavera Couture, Colors, Scala, Johnathan Kayne, Abby Paris, Lucci Lu, 2Cute by J Michaels and Sydney’s Closet, whose line is cut specifically for plus sizes. The 2Cute prom styles listed on the store’s website run $314 to $426. A web catalog and a sales floor are not the same thing, so call before you drive for one specific dress.
The schools it dresses
Russellville School District enrolls about 5,300 students across eleven schools, and Russellville High — the Cyclones, grades 10 through 12, roughly 1,280 students — is the 6A school in a region otherwise made up of much smaller ones. This is also the closest formalwear counter for the Pottsville Apaches, the Dover Pirates, the Atkins Red Devils and Dardanelle High, which draws students from three counties across the river. Morrilton and Clarksville are farther out on I-40 in either direction.
Small-school proms make dress duplication a live worry: at a school graduating fifty seniors, two identical gowns is not a coincidence anyone forgets. Ask at the counter whether they track which style went to which school. It is a fair question and the answer tells you a lot about how the shop is run.
Planning the trip
Hours posted on the store’s site are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with appointments available outside that. The Saturday close at 3 is the one to watch if you are coming in from Yell or Johnson County. The phone is (479) 890-9557.
Russellville has two other formalwear shops, Rendezvous Formal Wear and Nouri Formals, so a single Saturday can cover more than one floor before anyone commits. Arkansas proms land in the spring, and the useful stretch for shopping is winter, while the new season’s stock is intact and alterations still have runway.
