Three state titles stand behind the racks on West Oak Street. Jalin Wood, who owns Elegant Evenings, was Mississippi Miss Hospitality in 2001, Miss Mississippi in 2004 and Miss Mississippi USA in 2007, and the shop is built around what she learned on those stages. It is a prom and pageant store first, sitting in the same downtown blocks that HGTV's Home Town made familiar to people who have never set foot in Jones County.

That line from the About page carries more weight than a typical owner bio. Someone who has walked a state stage knows how a bodice holds up through a long evening, how a hem behaves on stairs, and which colors survive a gymnasium's lighting. Prom shoppers get the benefit of that eye even if they never enter a pageant.
Her background is not only sequins. A 2005 Mississippi Legislature resolution honoring her Miss Mississippi win notes that she grew up in Waynesboro, graduated as salutatorian of Wayne Academy, and earned a chemistry degree summa cum laude from Mississippi College. That mix of stage experience and a detail-minded streak shows in how the store is run, down to a website that lets shoppers filter gowns by what is physically in stock.

The homepage bills the shop as having one of the largest selections of prom and pageant dresses in South Mississippi, and the store is an authorized Sherri Hill retailer. In 2023 it was named Jim's Formal Wear Elite Retailer of the Year. The site's Evening and Prom menu reads like a who's who of the category:

Shoppers can sort by beaded and sequin, boho, feather, high-low, lace, mermaid, open back, sheer, strapless, two-piece, V-neck and short prom dresses, and there is a dedicated plus-size prom category. The in-stock size filter covers 000 to 32, plus women's 14W to 32W, so a girl can check whether something in her size is physically in the shop before driving downtown. Homecoming, quinceañera, Sweet 16 and red-carpet looks share the floor, and little girls' pageant wear from Sugar Kayne and Ava Presley has its own corner.

Who makes the trip to Oak Street
Laurel High School is the hometown prom, and the Jones County schools fill out the calendar: West Jones in Soso, Northeast Jones on the north side of the county, and South Jones in Ellisville. Petal High, in Forrest County on the Hattiesburg side, is within range down I-59. Pageant families come from much farther, since a state-level contestant will cross south Mississippi to shop with someone who has held the title she wants. Bridal is part of the business, with Sherri Hill Bridal, Pearl Bridal and Sophia Thomas on the rack, but prom and pageant are clearly the center of gravity.

Yes. The modeling lessons, makeup appointments and airbrush tanning are listed as general services, not pageant-only extras, so a prom client can book them around her event.
