Two high schools drive most of the spring business. Harlan High School, the Green Dragons, is on East Central Street downtown and enrolls about 450 students across grades 5 through 12 as the only high school in the Harlan Independent district. Harlan County High School, the Black Bears, sits on US 119 in Baxter with roughly 940 students; it opened in 2008 out of a countywide consolidation, and its feeder schools reach across the valleys — Evarts, Cumberland, Cawood, Black Mountain, Green Hill. One prom, students arriving from communities spread up and down several creek roads.
