Most gown shops start as gown shops. The Fuze started as a clothing store in the Aberdeen mall and worked its way into formalwear from the other direction. Co-owner Devin Oland joined the family business in 2014, and it was a strong first prom season that pulled the store toward bridal — a few bridesmaid dresses for friends, then a wedding gown for an employee, then a department. “We adapt to our area needs and I think we’ve found that now,” she told Aberdeen Magazine in 2017, when the shop was not quite three years old.
Ten-plus years on, the mix is still unusual for a prom destination in South Dakota: casual women’s clothing on the same floor as prom gowns, bridal, mother-of-the-occasion dresses, and a tuxedo rental counter. The store is a Jim’s Formal Wear affiliate, so the boy in the group can be measured in the same trip. Its own Facebook listing marks the price range at the bottom of the scale, and the 2017 profile described low to moderate prices plus a layaway program — useful if the dress is picked in November and prom is in April.

Three prom lines list The Fuze on their official retailer locators: Colette, Dave & Johnny, and Faviana. Faviana keeps a dedicated store page for this location. That is a modest, verifiable lineup rather than a wall of designers, and it is the honest version — anything else on the racks changes season to season and you should ask before you drive.
Suite 43, and the mall’s three names
The address is 3315 6th Ave SE, Suite 43, on Aberdeen’s southeast side. The building has been renamed twice around the store: it opened in August 1990 as Lakewood Mall, became Aberdeen Mall in October 2014, and was rebranded Uptown Aberdeen in July 2020 by its owner, RockStep Capital. Plenty of listings, including the store’s own Facebook page, still say Aberdeen Mall. The 2017 magazine directions put The Fuze next to Herberger’s, which is no longer a landmark — Bon-Ton liquidated the chain in 2018.
What is still there is a nine-screen theater in the same building, which makes a dress trip from out of town into an afternoon instead of an errand. Aberdeen is the state’s third-largest city, and RockStep puts the mall’s regional trade area above 80,000 people — that is Brown County’s 1,700-odd square miles and roughly 38,000 residents, plus the counties on every side of it and a stretch of southern North Dakota.
What the alternatives cost you in windshield time
In town, Brides N Belles on South Main has been handling bridal and special occasion since 1993, so Aberdeen is not a one-shop market. Outside town, the math gets long fast:
- Watertown — 96 miles, close to two hours each way
- Fargo — roughly 175 to 185 miles
- Sioux Falls — 206 miles, about three hours
That is the argument for a mall shop with mall hours. The Jim’s Formal Wear retailer listing shows 10 to 8 Monday through Friday and 10 to 7 Saturday, which is what lets a family from a farm town forty minutes out come in after work rather than burning a Saturday.
Season timing
Prom here lands in mid-April, earlier than a lot of the country. Aberdeen Central has held it on April 11 and, another year, on Saturday, April 12, with grand march first and the district’s post-prom party open to any junior or senior afterward, whether or not they walk. Backing up from a mid-April Saturday, that means dress shopping in January and February, with alterations time built in. The store prefers appointments so someone can be assigned to you, though walk-ins are welcome to look and try on.
