February 2013 is when the current chapter of Dynamite Designs began. Owner Kristen told Wallingford Patch in a 2015 small business profile that new management took over that month and kept the name the shop had inherited from its previous owner. She told Patch the name suited a boutique whose formalwear had been received as dynamite dress wear.
Today the business is focused squarely on prom. The home page calls it a premier destination for this year’s prom dresses, and the prom collection page describes Dynamite Designs by Kristen as Connecticut’s authorized retailer of all top brand prom dress lines.

That is how the contact page introduces the store, and the brand menu backs up the second sentence. The prom collection is split by designer, with Sherri Hill and Jovani each given their own section, Jovani’s JVN line listed separately, and Faviana, La Femme and its Gigi line, and Primavera Couture alongside them. Sydney’s Closet and its Tease Prom collection round out the menu, which gives shoppers who wear extended sizes a dedicated label to start with.
Kristen came from a corporate background before taking over the shop, and she told Patch she leaned on her staff to learn the details of the dress business that shoppers rarely see. Personal service sits at the center of how she describes the job. “I am proud to help each customer find that perfect dress they are looking for,” she said, adding that she loves when customers come back with photos from their events.
She also had a warning for families. In the same interview, Kristen said many prom shoppers had come into the boutique after being scammed online by sites claiming to sell the same designers that specialty boutiques carry at far lower prices, only to receive a gown that was not the real label. Her advice was to buy special occasion dresses in person, where the label, the fit and the color can be checked before money changes hands.

Lyman Hall and Mark T. Sheehan are the town’s two public high schools, the hometown connection for most of its local prom shoppers. Cheshire High, North Haven High and Meriden’s Maloney and Platt high schools all sit in the surrounding towns, and Kristen noted that the shop’s spot in the middle of the state lets it serve both locals and shoppers who travel in from farther across south-central Connecticut and beyond.
