A stylist reserved for you alone. That is the trade Vivi's Bridal Salon makes with every prom shopper who comes through its door on Lancaster Road in Richmond, and it shapes everything else about the visit. There are no walk-ins here. You book, you show up with your prom date and a few photos on your phone, and someone pulls gowns for you instead of leaving you to dig through a rack while three other parties do the same.

Krystin Arnold opened the salon in 2015, and it has been family-owned since then. The name belongs to her sister Vivian. Planning Vivian's wedding at The Kentucky Castle is what pushed Krystin toward a salon of her own, and Vivian, in turn, was named after their grandmother, so the sign out front carries two generations at once. The salon also points to a family background in garment design, which explains why its stylists talk about how a gown sits at the neckline and falls through the skirt rather than just which size to grab. Krystin is on site and involved day to day.

Samples on the floor rotate through the year, so the exact style you saved may not be hanging there, and the stylist can tell you whether it can be special-ordered.

Pageant work runs alongside prom and overlaps with it constantly. Vivi's carries evening gown and final-walk styles from Jovani and Rachel Allan, couture pageant pieces from the Turkish house Madam Burcu, and it partners with Jovani Couture on custom gowns where the contestant helps decide the silhouette, color and beading. A girl who competes in a county fair pageant in July and wants something equally dramatic for her senior prom the following April can work with the same stylist for both.

That line sits on the salon's pageant page, next to a list of partners that includes Amerifest Pageants, Kentucky Festivals Pageants and the county fair pageants sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Fairs & Horse Shows. Who drives to Lancaster Road

Richmond is the Madison County seat and home to Eastern Kentucky University, and the salon sits in the southern part of town just off I-75. Lancaster Road is the route west toward Garrard County. That geography sets the shopping map. Madison Central High School in Richmond is the county's largest high school, with Madison Southern High School in Berea about fifteen minutes south and Model Laboratory School on the EKU campus close by. Garrard County High School in Lancaster sits at the far end of the road the salon is on, and Estill County High School in Irvine lies northeast across the county line. Lexington, home to big schools such as Tates Creek High, is about thirty minutes up the interstate, and the salon names it first among the cities its clients travel from.

Can we stop in without booking?

No. Vivi's requires an appointment for every visit, prom included, so a stylist is free for you. Special occasion appointments run shorter than the 60 to 90 minutes set aside for brides, and the stylist confirms the length when you book. Bring your event date, a few inspiration photos and, if possible, shoes close to the heel height you will wear.

How do we pay, and can a prom gown be returned?

The salon takes card, Venmo, Cash App and cash. All gown purchases are final sale because so many are special orders, which is why the stylist walks through fit and sizing with you before anything is ordered.

Is the salon useful for a prom shopper from outside Madison County?
