This is a wedding shop that also sells prom. National Harbor’s own tenant directory describes House of JonLei Atelier as a bridal specialty boutique carrying bridal gowns, social gowns and rental tuxedos, and lists it as African American owned and woman owned. Its verified prom labels are Jessica Angel and Tiffany Designs. On the bridal side the shop’s site names Sophia Tolli, Nicole Spose and Christina Wu. That mix explains most of what a prom shopper should expect here: fewer racks of $150 short dresses, more of the machinery that a bride gets.
How the shop actually works
Everything runs by appointment, booked through the shop’s own site. The floor is a sample floor: the FAQ says every dress in the boutique is a sample, and samples run sizes 10 through 32, which is a wider try-on range than most prom departments in Prince George’s County put on hangers. Seamstresses work in house, and the shop also does customizations, pressing and steaming on gowns bought there.
Two numbers from the FAQ matter to a junior or senior with a date on the calendar. Special-order gowns take 9 to 12 months on average, and the stated special-order floor is $1,500 before tax and alterations. Rush options exist but have to be cleared with the designer, and there are no discounts outside announced promotions. If the shop does not have a style in stock, it can request a loaner sample from the designer for a $100 non-refundable fee, credited back if a gown is purchased. In practice, that means a March or April prom shopper is buying off the rack, and a shopper who wants a specific special-order style needs to start in the fall.
Tuxedo rentals are on site as well, which is unusual for a bridal boutique and useful if a couple wants one stop. The shop also keeps a quinceañera collection — worth knowing in a county where roughly a quarter of residents are Hispanic and quince season overlaps prom season.
Getting there, and the parking problem
153 Potomac Passage sits in the Waterfront District, off the Beltway at exit 2A after the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, or up MD 210 from Fort Washington and Accokeek. The Fleet Garage is at Fleet Street and Potomac Passage, closest to the store; National Harbor’s parking page lists $5 for the first hour and a half and $15 up to three hours across the garages. This is a resort district — Gaylord National, MGM, Tanger Outlets with its 85 brands — so a Saturday afternoon in April means competing with day-trippers for a space. A weekday appointment costs less and takes less time.
Whose prom this is
Two high schools share the store’s ZIP code, 20745, and they are each other’s rivals: Oxon Hill High School, the Clippers, on Leyte Drive, and Potomac High School, the Wolverines, on Boydell Avenue. Friendly High School on Allentown Road in Fort Washington and Crossland High School on Temple Hill Road in Temple Hills are both a short drive out. Alexandria and southern Fairfax County families are across the bridge, closer to this shop than to most of Northern Virginia’s formalwear.
Hours are Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 to 6, Sunday noon to 5, closed Monday. Call ahead about prom stock specifically — the bridal calendar drives this business, and what is on the floor in January is not what is on the floor in April.
