Most prom shopping ends with a second trip to somebody else’s tailor. At Belle Bridals, a small storefront at 749 Route 35 in Middletown, the alterations happen in the same room as the racks. The shop’s own site credits Kim, its on-site seamstress, with more than 30 years of experience, and describes work that goes past taking in a waist — adding sleeves, lowering a back. That matters more for a prom dress than people expect. A gown ordered in a stock size almost never fits a 17-year-old off the hanger, and in Monmouth County the alterations backlog in April and May is real. Buying where the fitting happens removes one appointment and one set of deadlines from the calendar.
What it carries
Three prom labels are confirmed through the designers’ own retailer locators: Alyce Paris, Clarisse and Jovani. That is a mainstream-to-dressy range — Jovani for beaded and fitted looks, Clarisse and Alyce Paris covering ballgowns and simpler A-lines. The shop’s own prom page also displays Faviana, JVN, Colors Dress and Lucci Lu, but that page’s images date to 2017, so treat those as worth a phone call rather than a promise.
Prom is one season in a business built mainly on weddings. The store describes itself as a full-service bridal boutique handling brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, flower girls and special occasion dresses. Practically, that means two things for a prom shopper: the person helping you does this year-round, and in May you may be sharing the floor with a bridal party.
It is a small store, and reviewers keep saying so
Nearly every review of Belle Bridals mentions the size of the room, usually to argue with the first impression it gives. One Yelp reviewer wrote that the shop “may give you the impression they have little to choose from” before describing the number of styles as a surprise. Yelp lists the shop in the $$ range across 24 reviews. Neighbors posting on Nextdoor mention it most often for tailoring, including alterations on gowns bought elsewhere — the store notes that outside alterations depend on the season, which in practice means don’t count on it in April.
Who ends up here
Middletown Township is large, and since Mater Dei Prep closed in 2022 — the township bought the Church Street property, and the building came down — nearly every public high school student in town is at one of two schools. Middletown High School North on Tindall Road enrolled 1,289 students in 2024–25; Middletown High School South on Nut Swamp Road enrolled 1,406. Two proms, one town, and a dress shop sitting on the highway that connects both ends of it.
The Route 35 location also puts the shop inside the township’s main retail corridor. Town Brook Commons, the Kohl’s and Stop & Shop center with Famous Footwear and Panera, is directly across the highway at 754 Route 35, which makes shoes-and-dress the same trip. Hazlet is about four miles up Route 35; Red Bank is about four and a half miles the other way. Coming from farther out, the Garden State Parkway is a short drive, and Middletown’s North Jersey Coast Line station sits at Railroad Avenue and Church Street.

- The store’s own site lists it closed Tuesdays, open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days, until 8 p.m. Thursday, and Sunday by appointment. Third-party listings show different Thursday and Sunday hours, so call rather than trusting either.
- Walk-ins are welcome during business hours per the shop, but an appointment is required for anything involving alterations.
