The name is older than the address. Jovani’s retailer locator still sends shoppers to 228 Union Square NW, downtown Hickory, and so do several older directory listings. Hickory sits in Catawba County, in the foothills of western North Carolina, where I‑40 crosses US 321. Center Street runs north out of downtown; the 1700 block is past the square, in a stretch of small storefronts rather than anything you reach from a mall parking deck.
What the shop covers
By its own description, Tracy’s is not a prom-only store. It stocks prom, pageant, eighth-grade dance, mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom, and social occasion dresses, plus shoes, jewelry and accessories. It also rents tuxedos, which matters if you would rather settle a dress and a tux in one stop than split the errand between two ends of town. Layaway and special orders are both offered. Facebook lists the store’s price range as $$ and shows 92% of 34 reviewers recommending it.

A two-label buy is worth understanding before you go. You are not walking into a floor of a dozen designers; you are walking into one buyer’s picks from two houses. That can be good news if those houses suit you, and it is the reason to call and describe what you want before making the trip from Lenoir or Taylorsville.
The schools in range
Within a short drive: Hickory High and Hickory Career & Arts Magnet in the city, then St. Stephens, Fred T. Foard, Bandys, Bunker Hill, Maiden and Newton-Conover across Catawba County. Widen it to forty-five minutes and you add Alexander Central in Taylorsville, Hibriten and South Caldwell up 321, and Freedom and Patton in Morganton.
That is a lot of proms drawing on the same small handful of formalwear shops, and duplicate-dress anxiety is real when one store serves eight or ten schools. Ask, out loud, what has already gone to your school in your color. Small stores usually keep track, and it is a fair question.
North Carolina proms cluster in late April and early May, which puts serious shopping in January through March and makes special-order timing the thing to nail down on a first visit. For chain formalwear, the other side of town is the Valley Hills Mall corridor on Catawba Valley Boulevard, where Men’s Wearhouse handles tuxedo rentals and alterations. Charlotte’s selection is about an hour down I‑40 and US 321, which is exactly the drive a shop like this exists to save you.
