Almost every prom dress bought in the Philadelphia suburbs gets altered somewhere — a hem, a strap, a waist taken in an inch. At 325 York Road, that work does not go out the door. L&H says its owner is also its head seamstress and has been doing bridal tailoring since the early 1970s, and that gowns are never handed off to an outside tailor. For a formal dress you will wear once, in a hurry, in April, that matters more than almost anything else about a store.
The shop has been in business since 1975. It is a bridal store first — wedding gowns, mothers’ dresses, bridesmaids, tuxedos — and prom sits alongside that rather than driving it. Jovani, Terani and Tiffany Designs all list this York Road address on their official retailer locators, so those labels come through the door here.
One thing worth knowing before making the drive: L&H runs three separate stores in Pennsylvania, and the prom page on its own website is written for the third one — L&H Bridal RACK in Sinking Spring, outside Reading, where the prom designers listed are Christina Wu Prom, Lucci Lu and Athena. The middle store, L&H Couture, is on South Main Street in Doylestown. Call the Jenkintown number and ask what prom stock is actually on the floor at York Road before you plan an afternoon around it.
Where this puts you
York Road is Route 611, and in Jenkintown it is the business district that splits the borough into an east side and a west side. The whole borough is about.58 of a square mile with roughly 4,500 residents, incorporated in 1874 out of Abington Township and now wedged between Abington and Cheltenham. Center City is about ten miles south down the same road. This was a serious retail strip once — the “Golden Mile” — and what survived the mall era is the kind of street where a single-owner dress shop can still hold a storefront for fifty years.
The high schools within a few minutes of the store are wildly different sizes, which changes what shopping here means depending on where you go:
- Abington Senior High School, Highland Avenue — 2,793 students as of 2023–24.
- Cheltenham High School, Rices Mill Road in Wyncote — about 1,457 students.
- Jenkintown Middle/High School — roughly 310 students across grades 7 through 12, so a graduating class near fifty.
- Abington Friends School, 575 Washington Lane in Jenkintown — a Quaker pre-K through 12 school of about 600.
A Jenkintown junior is shopping against fifty classmates and will be seen in photographs by all of them. An Abington junior is one of several hundred and has different math to do. Both are close enough to walk in on a Tuesday evening after practice.

Two of those lines catch people out. Friday is closed, which is the day a lot of families assume a dress shop is open. And Saturday, the obvious day to bring a parent, runs four hours and by appointment only — the same four hours every bride in Montgomery County wants.
