The shop writes down what it sells. Its own site states the policy in four words — no repeats, be original — and explains that it keeps a registry of dresses sold, with a free photo of the gown handed to the buyer. That is a practical service in a city this size. Wichita East, whose building on Douglas sits in the same 67211 ZIP code as the store, enrolled more than 2,300 students in 2023–24. One dance, one gym, and a lot of girls shopping from the same handful of racks. Asking whether a style has already gone to a particular school is the whole reason a shop bothers keeping the log.
Parrot-Fa-Nalia has been in business in Kansas since 1970, according to its own listings and its Better Business Bureau record, which also carries the alternate name Parrot-Fa-Nalia Party Place. It has never been an appointment shop. The published hours are noon to 6 Monday through Friday, noon to 5 Saturday, closed Sunday — which means a weekday after school works and a Sunday drive does not. Stock is described as in-store for immediate take-home in sizes 0 through 32, rather than ordered in.
Getting there, and who else is coming
The address is a block south of Harry on Hillside; the store’s own directions line has read “south of Harry on Hillside” for years. That puts it about a mile down from Kellogg, which is how most families arrive from Derby, Haysville, Mulvane, Rose Hill and Andover, and from El Dorado and Augusta to the northeast. Wichita Southeast, the old neighborhood high school in this part of town, now sits well east at 2641 S. 127th St. East, so its Golden Buffaloes drive back in toward Hillside rather than out from it.
Wichita is the state’s largest city and USD 259 alone enrolls roughly 50,000 students, which is why prom shopping here also pulls in day trips from Winfield, Wellington and Hutchinson. The next markets with comparable depth are Kansas City, about three hours northeast, and Oklahoma City to the south.
Beyond prom
The store runs several lines out of one building, which is worth knowing before the drive:
- Tuxedo rental — it is a Jim’s Formal Wear affiliated store. Its listings describe a complete rental as coat, pants, shirt, vest and tie, 10 percent off with a dress purchase, and one free tux in a party of six.
- In-house alterations, available on dresses bought at the store.
- A layaway plan with no fee.
- Military ball gowns, listed alongside prom and homecoming. McConnell Air Force Base, home of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, is on the southeast edge of Wichita at 2801 S. Rock Rd.
- Bridal, bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses, plus shoes and accessories; the business records also list a hall for rent.
On labels: Alyce Paris and Dave & Johnny both list Parrot-Fa-Nalia on their official retailer locators. The store’s own site advertises a longer designer roster and calls itself the largest prom and bridal selection in Kansas, which is the store’s claim rather than a verified count. Anyone hunting one specific designer should call first, since a floor of in-stock gowns turns over.
