The store sits at 931 National Highway in LaVale — US 40, the old National Road, the strip that carries most of the retail between Cumberland and Frostburg. Western Maryland does not have many gown stores, and this one has been at it a while: business listings and the shop’s own materials put its founding at 1979, and it advertises itself as Maryland’s oldest bridal store.
What matters more for a prom shopper is the range under one roof. Lennox East handles prom and pageant gowns, homecoming, bridal, bridesmaids, mothers’ dresses and flower girl dresses, and it rents tuxedos. One stop covers the dress and the date’s tux, which in a county where the alternative is a highway trip is the practical argument for going.
The verified prom labels
Three brands list Lennox East on their own retailer locators: Clarisse, Dave & Johnny and Tiffany Designs. All three are prom-and-pageant houses rather than bridal-only lines, which tells you the prom floor here is a real part of the business and not a spring afterthought. The shop says it stocks sizes 0 to 24 in store and ready to try on.
Its prom page tells shoppers to register their dress for their prom. That is the standard independent-store practice: the shop logs which gown went to which school’s dance so two girls from the same prom don’t end up in the same dress. It only works if you buy early, which is the point of the instruction.
Who shops here
Allegany County has three public high schools, all within a short drive of the National Highway strip:
- Fort Hill High School, Greenway Avenue in Cumberland — the Sentinels
- Allegany High School, Seton Drive in Cumberland
- Mountain Ridge High School in Frostburg
Add the Center for Career and Technology Education in Cresaptown and the college population at Frostburg State and Allegany College of Maryland, and that is the whole formal-season calendar for this corner of the state, compressed into one small trade area.
The shop also draws from outside Maryland. LaVale is the retail center for a three-state pocket, and Potomac Valley Transit runs a route up from West Virginia to Country Club Mall, just up Vocke Road from the store. If a student doesn’t have a car, the county’s ACT buses and the Frostburg State shuttles both serve the mall end of the strip.
The alternative is a drive
Going elsewhere means going east. The nearest David’s Bridal is in Hagerstown, and Hagerstown independents openly name Cumberland in the list of towns they serve — that is how far away the next real selection sits. Same story north and west toward Altoona and Morgantown. For most families here, a dress trip out of the county is a full day on I-68, so the LaVale store gets first look.
Hours here are limited and shift with the season — prom weeks and bridal weekends do not look like February afternoons. Call before you drive, especially if you need a tux fitting on the same visit.
