A prom storefront in Sanford and a bridal salon in Birch Run show how differently Michigan prom shops are built

Sanford and Birch Run sit in the same part of mid-Michigan and answer the prom question in opposite ways. Three Diamonds gave prom and homecoming a building of their own, apart from the family's bridal salon. Bridal by Viper is a wedding salon of more than 13,000 square feet in an outlet mall, and it sells prom dresses off that same floor. Both work. They are different visits.
That split runs through every region below. The prom dress stores here come in four kinds: dance-first boutiques, bridal salons with a prom side, special-occasion shops, and one national chain. The type decides whether you can walk in, whether a tailor works on site, and whether anyone records which gown went to which school.
Metro Detroit, in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties
Only two of these nine carry bridal in their names. Around Sterling Heights and Royal Oak the usual prom stop is a dance-first boutique, and three of the four in that group take walk-ins. Know Runway's rule before a Saturday trip: a student tries on only with her own parent there. Betsy's turns its bridal setup into a perk for couples, since suits hang beside the gowns.
Greater Lansing, in Ingham County
The capital region puts both models side by side. Brides book ahead at Fantastic Finds. Prom shoppers just register at the desk and work racks sorted by size and color. Coco's has no wedding floor to plan around, so the hem can be booked the day you buy.
Saginaw Valley and the Tri-Cities, in Saginaw and Midland counties
Two families here keep prom and bridal behind separate doors on purpose. Viper Apparel came first. The Birch Run salon grew out of it as a sister store, and the pageant eye carries over: staff who dress contestants know which colors hold up under lights and cameras.
West Michigan and the southwest corner, in Kent, Kalamazoo and Berrien counties
Bridal-first shops carry more of the load out here. Memories and Wedding Belles both book appointments, which buys a consultant's full attention. Memories also quit registering prom dresses in 2021, judging that online copies made the promise impossible to keep. Luxe is the walk-in choice. Sales there are final, so line up a seamstress early.
The Upper Peninsula, in Delta County
Dress Up is the only listed shop north of the bridge, and it promises not to sell the same gown in the same color to anyone else headed to your prom. No shop in the northern Lower Peninsula is listed yet.
