The Clothing Cove stocks roughly 2,000 dresses at 414 North Main Street, and most of them are not for seventeen-year-olds. The store describes its own range as running from casual day dresses through mother-of-the-bride and evening gowns, in sizes petite through plus, and its Yelp listing puts the mother-of-the-bride count alone above a thousand. Prom lives inside that larger business: the shop appears on the official retailer locators for Dave & Johnny and Terani, two labels a Michigan junior would recognize from prom racks anywhere.
The practical effect is that a teenager and her mother can shop the same building on the same afternoon — the student for a prom gown, the mother for an April or May wedding. Gowns in the store’s online special-occasion catalog carry labels like Adrianna Papell, Betsy & Adam, Aidan Mattox and Xscape, mostly priced between about $250 and $615. That is the tier this store sits in. It is not a mall rack, and it is not a $900 couture salon.
The town, and the drive in
Milford is a village of 6,520 people in western Oakland County, incorporated in 1869, with the Huron River running through a downtown that SEEN Magazine counts at more than thirty restaurants. The Milford Historical Society describes the two normal approaches plainly: South Milford Road north from I-96, or North Milford Road south from M-59. Both put you on Main Street within a few blocks of the store. Shoppers posting on Nextdoor describe parking on the street out front and a lot behind the building; one neighbor from Northville said the trip was “definitely worth the drive.”
Those recommendations come from a wide radius. On Nextdoor, people in Farmington Hills, Novi and Canton have been pointed here after striking out at the department stores and the mall chains. The rest of the township is not retail at all — the Milford Historical Society notes that a third of the township outside the village is either parkland or the General Motors Proving Ground, the 1924 test site that is still one of the largest employers in the area.
Which schools this store dresses
Neither of the two Huron Valley high schools is actually in Milford village, which is part of why downtown functions as the commercial center for all of them. Milford High School, the Mavericks, sits at 2380 South Milford Road in Highland Township with about 1,250 students. Lakeland High School is on Bogie Lake Road in White Lake, in the same building as International Academy-West. The district also runs Harbor High in Commerce Township. Milford and Lakeland are Lakes Valley Conference rivals inside one district, which means two prom nights, two sets of pictures, and a shared window of a few spring weeks when everyone is looking at once. That window overlaps the store’s wedding-guest season, so early is better than late.
What the store is
It started in 1987 as California Toning of Milford, an exercise business that also sold workout clothes. By 1990 the owners — a wife and husband, Eric, who still run it — had dropped the exercise half and kept the clothes. In August 2017 they opened Tenacity Boutique next door as a casual sister store, with a portion of its proceeds going to Hope Against Trafficking in Pontiac.
The Cove is also a Brighton Heart Store and carries Rachel Marie Designs jewelry made in Michigan, so accessories can be settled on the same trip. It is closed Sundays; Saturday is the earliest open, at 9:30. Weekday afternoons the staff run live selling sessions on the store’s app and Facebook page, which is worth knowing if you walk in around 12:30 and part of the floor is busy on camera.
