Jill Jones has a test for a good prom store, and it has nothing to do with price tags. She told Mt. Lebanon Magazine that she still remembers how the shop smelled on the day she bought her own prom gown, and that she wants the same memory for the girls who shop with her now. Her Weirton store, J.Jones Evening Wear, is built to make that kind of impression at scale. Its website names it the largest prom super store in the area, with more than 1,500 gowns in stock and sizes running from 000 to 34.

The store sits in the Three Springs Crossing business plaza, right off the Three Springs Drive exit of U.S. 22. That address matters more in the Northern Panhandle than it would almost anywhere else. Weirton is squeezed between the Ohio River and the Pennsylvania line, so the prom traffic here comes from three states. The store's own pitch leans on that, describing the Weirton location as just minutes from the Pittsburgh airport.

From a South Park bridal job to a 10,000-square-foot floor

Jones grew up in South Park, south of Pittsburgh, and her first job was in a bridal store. The Almanac reported in 2026 that she has worked in formalwear for more than 40 years and opened her first shop in Peters Township, on Route 19, at age 25, before moving to West Virginia. J.Jones has been anchored in Weirton since at least 2011.

In October 2020 the business held a grand opening at its current home in Three Springs Crossing, with the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce on hand, according to the Weirton Daily Times. The flagship now runs past 10,000 square feet. More recently, Jones added a smaller boutique in Uptown Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, which focuses on prom, homecoming and pageant rather than wedding gowns. Weirton remains the big floor and the one with the full stock.

What does a superstore mean in practice? It means the racks cover the whole size range in one place, from 000 to 34, and it means stylists who do nothing but prom and homecoming during the season. The store says its prom and homecoming stylists are industry trained and there to help pick a gown, not just ring it up.

That last line is the one shoppers ask about. Jones explained to Mt. Lebanon Magazine that the private collection is produced directly for J.Jones, so nobody else has those dresses. For a shopper who wants a gown nobody else at her school can buy, that is the rack to start with.

“I can remember what the store smelled like when I bought my prom gown,” Jones said. “We want it to be the same way for these girls.”

Prom shopping at the Weirton store is walk-in, and the site draws a clear line between the visits that need a booking and the ones that do not.

Saturdays are the busiest day for tux fittings, and the store warns guys to expect a wait.

Tuxes, pageant and the schools that shop here

The menswear side is bigger than an afterthought, and a date's tux and a gown can be sorted out in one afternoon.

Pageant girls get a separate track. That super-store title covers pageant as well as prom, and pageant shoppers book a private appointment with a pageant stylist whose own titles include Miss West Virginia United States 2008 and Mrs. West Virginia American 2022. The pageant racks run from evening gowns and interview wear down to tiny miss sizes.

On the West Virginia side, Weir High and Madonna High in Weirton are the hometown schools, with Oak Glen High in New Cumberland to the north and Brooke High in Wellsburg to the south. Across the river, Steubenville High and Indian Creek High in Wintersville are on the far side of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. From the east, families from Washington County and the Pittsburgh suburbs come out U.S. 22. The store sits at the meeting point of all that traffic in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle.
