This is a special-occasion boutique that also carries prom, not a prom store. Helen Ainson has dressed women in Darien since 1977. For most of those years, its main customer has been the mother of the bride or groom. The shop’s own site lists what it stocks in this order: evening gowns, cocktail dresses, casual clothing, shoes, jewelry, lingerie.
The prom side is real, though. Jovani, Mac Duggal and Terani all list Helen Ainson on their official store locators. Mac Duggal is also on the store’s own featured-designers page, next to Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman, Elliott Lauren and Pelle Moda shoes. The upshot: a mother and daughter can shop for two different events on one visit.
The store doesn’t publish how many prom gowns are on the floor at any time, and this page won’t guess. It’s a small shop with a small staff. Call before you drive in and ask what’s hanging in your size and length. Expect a one-on-one appointment rather than an hour of browsing on your own.
Where it is and when it’s open
The shop is at 23 Corbin Drive, in the Corbin District downtown. That’s a seven-acre block bordered by I-95, Boston Post Road and Corbin Drive, rebuilt as eleven buildings with apartments over shops. Parking is behind the building.
- From I-95, take Exit 11 to US‑1, then head toward the railroad station.
- It’s two blocks from the Darien Metro-North station on the New Haven Line. That matters for a teenager in Fairfield County without a car.
- Hours per the store: Monday through Friday 9:30 to 5:30, Saturday 9:30 to 5:00, closed Sunday. There are no late weeknight hours, so a school-day fitting means leaving early.
Prom season here
Darien High School holds both a junior and a senior prom. Senior night comes with a town ritual: the annual DHS pre-prom party at Weed Beach on Nearwater Lane. It runs under a tent from about 4:30 to 7, and tickets cover the senior and parents. So the dress gets photographed outdoors in daylight before anyone boards a bus. Recent senior proms have been held off-site. The student paper Neirad reported one at The Loading Dock in Stamford.
New Canaan, Stamford, Norwalk and Rowayton are all within fifteen minutes of Corbin Drive. That makes it a short drive from Stamford High, Westhill, Norwalk High, Brien McMahon and New Canaan High, as well as from Darien’s own school.
Who owns it
Erica Jensen ran Helen Ainson for decades. In 2022 she sold it to Corrie Belardinelli, who had been the store’s general manager. The Darien Times covered the handover at the time, and Jensen said the store would run the same way. Belardinelli moved the shop from Post Road into the new downtown space not long after.
