A prom appointment that ends with a fitting, not a referral
Prom shopping usually runs into the same snag. You find the dress, then you go looking for someone to hem it. At OML Bridal & Formal on NW Cole Terrace, that second trip doesn't happen. The shop keeps its own lead seamstress, Jessica, who describes herself as a custom seamstress and tailor for 30 years, and the store's bookkeeper, Sarah, also oversees in-store alterations and fittings. With a dance six weeks out, that saves a whole errand.
The other thing that sets the tone is the appointment. OML's stylists work one-on-one, by appointment, and the site is clear that the point is personal attention rather than a packed sales floor.
Who runs it counts, too. Owner and lead stylist Ericka says she has spent 16 years in the bridal and formalwear industry. Her co-owner and fellow lead stylist, Alissa Novak, grew up playing "store" and "stylist" with her, and between them the site counts 30 years of experience. The staff page shows a small-town shop that takes prom seriously: there is a dedicated formalwear specialist, a prom consultant, and a team member who has been the store's prom merchandise buyer two years running.
The prom and homecoming lineup
OML's site groups its special-occasion designers clearly, and the prom side is deep for a store this size. A simple way to plan a first prom visit:
- Start with the big names. Sherri Hill, Jovani, Alyce Paris, Rachel Allan and Portia and Scarlett all appear in the shop's prom and homecoming collections.
- Narrow by style. The website sorts prom gowns into floral, corset, beaded, lace and one-shoulder looks, which is a handy way to show your stylist what you like before the appointment.
- Look past the obvious. Jessica Angel and Sophia Thomas Designs also show up in the prom collections, and they are worth a try if you want something your friends haven't already pinned.
- Ask about fittings before you leave. With alterations handled in-house, there is no need to line up a separate seamstress.
Homecoming gets its own featured-designer list in the fall, built from the same five prom labels. Pageant gowns and menswear are on the site too, which helps when a date needs a tux that matches.
OML also throws an annual fashion show. The shop has teamed up with Alyssa & Crew for hair and makeup and Holly Frazier Photography for the shoot, and the photos are a fun way to see the shop's gowns styled head to toe.
Columbia High, Fort White and beyond
Columbia High in Lake City is the obvious feeder, and Fort White High sits at the south end of Columbia County. Families from Suwannee High in Live Oak and Union County High in Lake Butler come over from neighboring counties. Past that, OML lists a service area that stretches from Tallahassee to Tampa, including Gainesville, Jacksonville and Ocala, and Lake City's spot where I-75 meets I-10 makes the shop a reasonable meet-in-the-middle stop for much of north central Florida.
The store is also a full bridal salon, with bridesmaid lines like Cinderella Divine. That side of the business is a brief detour for prom shoppers, though the same seamstress and the same one-on-one approach apply to both.
