Same address, same phone, new name on the sign. The shop’s website calls Urban Dress Co. a reimagining of Teresa’s Bridal & Prom rather than a new business, and the old domain now loads the new site. If a search for Teresa’s turns up something confusing, the store did not close. Its Instagram bio claims 42-plus years in business.
The storefront is on the same downtown block as the Kossuth County Courthouse, which sits at 114 W State, and a few doors west of the 1913 Henry Adams Building at 123 E State — the Louis Sullivan “jewel box” that now houses the Algona Area Chamber. Parking downtown is street parking, and it is not a problem.
Why the drive time matters here
Kossuth is the largest county in Iowa by land area, about 972 square miles, the result of Bancroft County being folded into it in 1855. Algona sits near the middle of that rectangle, which is the whole point of this store’s trade area: families at the north end — Swea City, Bancroft, Ledyard, whose 6–12 students attend North Union in Armstrong under the sharing agreement with North Kossuth — are a half hour or more from any formalwear rack, and Algona is the one in the middle. In town, both Algona High School and Bishop Garrigan draw from the same few miles.
The alternatives are all out of county: A Heavenly Celebration in Emmetsburg, roughly 25 minutes west on US 18; Grand Bridal in Spencer; Bliss Bridal & Formalwear in Mason City, about an hour east on the same highway; and the seasonal prom-only stores in the Des Moines metro, two hours south on US 169.
What it carries
Faviana and Jovani both list this address on their official retailer locators. The store’s own prom page adds Sherri Hill and Morilee. Tuxedo rental runs through Jim’s Formalwear, so a couple can be measured and fitted in one stop, and there is a tuxedo measurement form on the site for out-of-town groomsmen and dates.
Store policies worth knowing before the trip
- Appointments are required only for wedding gowns. Prom walk-ins are accepted, but during prom season the shop does not guarantee a consultant or a fitting room.
- No time limit on appointments.
- Free layaway. A dress can stay at the store until the dance; anything leaving the building has to be paid in full.
- Most of the inventory can be bought off the rack rather than special ordered.
- In-house seamstress, with alteration prices quoted up front. They will also alter gowns bought elsewhere, within limits.
- All sales are final — no returns, no refunds, and canceling a special order forfeits the deposit.
- All major cards except American Express, plus cash and checks.
- A VIP option runs two hours after regular hours for up to six guests, with a $100 non-refundable booking fee and a week’s notice.
The posted hours are the thing to check before driving in from Ledyard or Lu Verne. Monday and Tuesday are afternoons only, Wednesday is closed, Thursday runs latest, and Saturday ends at 1 p.m.
Timing
North Iowa proms cluster in April. The Algona High student news page puts the 2026 dance on April 18, themed Under the Western Sky; in 2025 it fell on April 26. Grand march happens at the school before the dance, with families in the seats, which means the gown gets looked at straight on and photographed for a solid stretch before anyone reaches the dance floor. Shopping in January or February leaves room for a special order and for alterations; by late March the racks are picked over and the seamstress is booked.
