Brenda Norman started with one dressing room and twenty wedding dresses in 1980, set up in the back of a fine jewelry store in downtown Lebanon. The shop outgrew that room, then outgrew Lebanon. Today Norman’s Bridal Shoppe runs a single 9,000-square-foot store on South Avenue in historic downtown Springfield, open there since 2011, and Liz Stoner works beside her as co-owner, the second generation of the family business. A member of the family is always on staff.
Liz joined the company in 2008. Her note to brides ends on a line that fits prom just as well: you deserve someone who cares. The team around her includes a stylist who studied fashion design at MSU and has been with the shop since 2012.
The name still says bridal. Prom, though, fills the calendar from December through April, and the shop treats it as its own season with its own events, its own sales and its own crew of student ambassadors.
The prom and homecoming racks
Norman’s names five prom designers: Sherri Hill, Ellie Wilde, Rachel Allan, Ashley Lauren and Ladivine. Homecoming draws from a smaller group, with short styles from Sherri Hill, Rachel Allan and Ladivine coming in for the August start of school. Ellie Wilde has had its own shopping weekend too. There is a quinceañera collection as well, and the shop stocks the petticoats and slips that give a ball gown its shape.
Sherri Hill gets special treatment. The label has its own weekend each winter, and the store puts it plainly.
Sherri Hill dresses always sell out so now is the best time to shop.
Walk-ins are welcome for prom and homecoming, though appointments are highly recommended for the calmest visit. During the store’s big March sale, no appointment is needed at all.
How a Norman’s prom season runs
The shop’s events follow the whole school year. Recent seasons have looked like this.

Then there are the ambassadors. Each summer the shop takes applications from high school juniors and seniors to serve as the face of Norman’s prom for the following season. The commitment is real. Ambassadors show up for photo shoots and social media takeovers and arrive with hair and prom makeup done. In return they pick their own dresses first and compete for a free prom dress that goes to the ambassador who brings in the most girls from her school and stays the most active online. The pay works out like this.

Norman’s also gives dresses away. The family donates prom dresses to Shine Inc. so that high school students who could not otherwise afford one can still go to prom, and it supports Harmony House and Whole Kids Outreach.

Run as in-store financing: one-third down, then equal installments for up to six months on dresses from stock. A small fee applies, though the December kickoff day has offered it free.

Springfield Public Schools runs five high schools inside the city: Central, Kickapoo, Glendale, Hillcrest and Parkview. Nixa, Ozark, Republic and Willard are close suburbs in southwest Missouri.

Norman’s says it is the most awarded bridal shop in Springfield, and the honors it lists include The Knot Hall of Fame in 2023 and Metropolitan Weddings Couples Choice. Brides have their own appointment-only side of the building. The store says it has over 400 wedding gown styles to choose from, in sizes 4 to 30, and each appointment starts with a personal stylist and gives the bride a spacious dressing room for an hour and a half. The bridal designers the store lists include Maggie Sottero, Sottero Midgley, Essence of Australia, Stella York, Martina Liana, Justin Alexander, Lillian West, Rebecca Ingram, Veni Infantino, All Who Wander and Morilee.
