Seng Couture's site ranks it among the largest premier bridal boutiques in the Northeast, and bridal is the core of the business. But a prom shopper who skips this Route 22 salon is missing something specific: a full evening department with recognizable prom names, its own alteration studio, and a designer on staff who will build a gown from scratch.
The evening side of the salon
The salon's FAQ notes that an entire floor is set aside for mother of the bride or groom and social events, and the evening collections are where prom shoppers should start. The evening designer list on the site is long, and two names will jump out to any junior or senior who has spent time scrolling gowns: Jovani and Terani Couture, both carried here in their evening collections. The same department lists Ysa Makino, Stephen Yearick, Bari Jay, Feriani Couture, Gia Franco, Janique, Tina Di Martina and more.
The online catalog makes the search easier than you might expect. You can filter by occasion, and Prom Dresses, Homecoming, Sweet 16 and Quinceanera all have their own checkboxes. There is also a search for in-store stock by size, with plus sizes included, so you can get a sense of what is physically in the building before you book.
Then there is ILLIANA. The FAQ describes it as Seng Couture's private in-house brand, made in the USA and designed by Mrs. Seng and her design team. Those gowns can be customized in design, fabric, style and color, and the team will also create one-of-a-kind looks if you bring sketches or photo references. For a prom shopper who wants a dress nobody else at the dance could possibly own, that is an unusual option for a store on a highway strip.
The house line has history behind it. The shop's history has Seng mastering couture design at fifteen under her aunt and opening her own shop in 2009 with the launch of her personal line. The shop has since moved to what its FAQ calls its "new home" in North Plainfield.
"Seng Couture, palatable passion for design, individual care for the women she makes beautiful."
Seng Couture closes its About page with that line, the same page that tells her story.

The in-house studio specializes in evening wear. It costs extra on an evening purchase and is included on ILLIANA gowns and fully custom pieces; the store recommends a first fitting four to six weeks before the event.
Stylists
Male and female, plus English and Spanish bilingual stylists. Request a preference before booking.
Payment
All sales are final, and orders require full payment.
Fittings and pickups
Weekdays.
North Plainfield schools along Route 22
The salon sits on the eastbound side of 22 in North Plainfield, at the eastern edge of Somerset County, New Jersey. North Plainfield High School is the hometown prom. Watchung Hills Regional in Warren, Plainfield High School just across the Union County line, Bridgewater-Raritan and Scotch Plains-Fanwood are the other schools close by. With quinceañera and Sweet 16 listed on the same occasion menu as prom, families planning more than one celebration in a year can work with the same stylists for each.
Timing is the main thing to plan around. The store says weekend and weeknight appointments book up quickly and recommends scheduling a few weeks ahead. If you're thinking about a special order or an ILLIANA design for a spring prom, the FAQ's own timeline argues for starting in the fall.

Seng Couture prom and alteration answers
Does Seng Couture sell prom dresses?
Yes. The evening department carries Jovani and Terani Couture among many other designers, and the online catalog includes a Prom Dresses filter. The store's own ILLIANA line can also be customized for prom.
Can Seng Couture alter my prom dress?
Yes, for gowns bought there. The in-house studio specializes in evening wear alterations for a fee. The store is not currently taking alteration work on garments bought elsewhere.
