Most prom shopping in downtown Los Angeles happens a few blocks north of this address. The Fashion District’s own shopping guide points people to Santee Street between 9th and 14th, and to Maple Avenue between Olympic and 12th, for dress after dress on crowded sidewalks. Formal Dress Shops, at 501 E. Washington Blvd. Suite #2, runs on the opposite logic. You book a time, you get buzzed through a gate, and you have a stylist to yourself.
The shop states the rule in capital letters on its own site: appointments are required. There is a single fitting room, described as 200 square feet with heat and air conditioning. Anyone 18 or under has to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parking is free and gated, which is not a small thing three blocks from the wholesale blocks on a weekday afternoon.
The hours are the thing to plan around
Listed hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific, Monday through Friday, closed on major U.S. holidays. No weekend window. For a high school junior, that means an appointment during a free period, on a minimum day, or straight after last bell to catch a late-afternoon slot. Santee Education Complex, the closest comprehensive high school, is a few blocks west on Maple Avenue — walkable. For everyone else, the trip has to be scheduled around a school day, and a parent has to come along.
If the drive does not work at all, the shop offers a live video consultation with a stylist from the same showroom. That is a real alternative here in a way it is not at a walk-in store, because the operation behind the showroom is a shipping business.
What it carries
Clarisse and La Femme both list this store on their official retailer locators. Those are prom-floor labels — fitted, beaded, high-slit, the dresses teenagers arrive already having screenshotted. The company’s own description of itself is much broader than prom: evening wear, mother of the bride and mother of the groom, bridesmaids, homecoming, quinceañera and sweet 16, pageant gowns, plus-size formalwear, men’s and boys’ suits, and accessories down to tiaras and petticoats. Its catalog also runs value labels including May Queen, Royal Queen and Primavera Couture.
Quinceañera and sweet-16 stock is not a sideline in this part of the city, and the shop lists it in the same breath as prom. The business advertises Spanish on its phone line.

Worth knowing before you book: the same inventory you are browsing at home is what the appointment gets you into a room with, so bring the style numbers.
Getting there
This is warehouse ground — garment wholesalers, loading docks, roll-up doors — not a retail block you stroll. The Metro A Line runs along Washington Boulevard here, with the San Pedro Street stop a short walk west, and the Santa Monica Freeway crosses a few blocks south. Central enough that the trade area is most of the basin, and specific enough that you should have the suite number in hand: it is Suite #2, behind the gate, and no one is expecting you unless you called.
