Formal Dress Shops

The prom dress you have been scrolling on Formal Dress Shops' website at midnight lives in a real room in downtown Los Angeles, and you can book time in that room. The company has sold formalwear online since 2007, and its showroom on East Washington Boulevard, at the southern edge of the Fashion District, is where the website becomes something you can zip up and turn around in.

Nobody browses racks here. The showroom page says in capital letters that appointments are required. You pick a slot, you show up, and the stylist's attention is yours for the visit.

That note comes from the showroom page too. Read it as a prom shopper and three things jump out. Bring a parent, since most juniors and seniors are 18 or under. Parking is handled, a relief in a part of town where curb space is scarce on a weekday. And the fitting room is big enough for the dress, the shopper and the person holding the phone.

What the prom side actually covers

The site runs a full prom section for the 2026 season, sorted every way a teenager sorts: long, short, ball gown, mermaid, corset, open back, sequin, satin, with a slit, plus size, and by price bands that start under $100 and climb from there. That price ladder is the useful part. A family can set a ceiling before the appointment and ask the stylist to pull only inside it.

The designer menu is long, and a good share of it is prom-floor stock. La Femme sits on its brand list, alongside these.

The catalog goes well past prom. Homecoming, quinceañera and sweet 16, damas, pageant, plus-size formal, wedding guest and evening wear all sit on the same site, along with men's and boys' suits and accessories down to tiaras and petticoats. Mother-of-the-bride and bridal are in there too, though for a junior that is background noise. More to the point, a family planning a quince one year and a prom the next can work with the same team.

Spanish speakers are covered as well. The phone and text line is advertised with "Se habla español," which in this part of Los Angeles is not a small courtesy.

Making the trip work around a school week

The showroom keeps a weekday schedule, so most students will be booking around class time: a minimum day, a late-afternoon slot after last bell, or a day off. For kids at Santee Education Complex, a few blocks away, that is easy. Families coming in from Roosevelt High in Boyle Heights, Jefferson High in South Los Angeles, Belmont High west of downtown, or Huntington Park High and Bell High to the southeast pull into the same gated lot, which makes the arrival painless. The Metro A Line runs along this stretch of Washington Boulevard, which helps anyone coming by train.

If the drive does not work at all, the store offers a live video session with a stylist directly from our LA Showroom, to borrow the site's phrasing. For an out-of-town grandparent paying for the dress, or a student who wants a second opinion before committing, that is a useful middle step.

One tip: save the style numbers of the dresses you like on the site and send them along when you book. It turns a general fitting into a focused one. Keep in mind that the store does not do alterations itself, so line up a seamstress for the hem once the dress is chosen. Much of Southern California runs on walk-in prom floors; this one runs on a calendar, and that is exactly its appeal for shoppers who want a quiet room and a stylist to themselves.
